I am in quite a hurry to pick up a notebook for studying abroad. I saw the new Dell Inspiron 6000 and was quite impressed. But I'm at a dilemma on the graphics cards. I saw it only includes the Integrated Intel 900 with 128 MB max shared system memory. Then I saw that they are testing the Radeon X300 for it as well and have said that it is available in the 64 MB configuration. They said they are still testing the 128 MB version of the X300 and I was wondering whether I should go for the X300 or the integrated solution.

And is a X700 or X600 that much faster? I know the X800 is going to be only available for bigger notebooks and will most likely cost in the $2000-$2500 US price range? So any advice will be appreciated, thanks![ :D]

When do you need it? As far as I know, the 6000 with the x300 vid cards aren't gonna be out for a little while.

Well, I live in Hong Kong and I called up Dell several times. They say that they can maybe offer me the X300 the 64 MB version, then they said they were testing the 128 MB version for stability issues or the sort. Well, I'm leaving Hong Kong on the 27th of January so I hope to get one by then. Dell Switzerland ain't too up to date as far as I checked it, they don't even have the 6000 yet. And I bet the prices there will cost a lot more than in Hong Kong or the USA.

Also, I wanna ask if the X300 can offer near Radeon 9600 or 9700 performance as the X600 is only slightly better than the 9700 and the X700 and X800 aren't going to be widely available. I ain't too demanding, I just look forward to some low res Doom 3 maybe and more on CS source when bored. [8D]

well i would think the x300 offers 9600-9700 performance because that is what i heard about the desktop x300. and also, if you need a better graphics card get the one that has the 64 mb config...i mean, its pci-express isnt it? It should be upgradable, so if you ever need one you can go and pick up a better card like the x700 or x800. now about the audio, like someone else said, look at Sony or Acer. The Acer TravelMate 8100 has a x700 in it, that looks pretty good. The FS should have a Nvidia GeForce 6200 in it (128 mb), but even though thats not that great, like I said, it should be upgradable. The thing is that the FS will probably come out in Feb. So, I think your best bet is to find out if the dell 6000 actually can have Hi-def audio and get the one with 64 and upgrade it. If you cant get a good one, then you should try the acer.

I gave Dell a call just barely, and they said the graphic card was upgradable. Is this true? I didn't think that notebook graphic cards were upgradable, forgive me for my notebook newbieness.

considering they are offering a $200 discount right now, that is an option for the impatient (probably being me). Then you could add an ATI x300 later or whatever.

well, the PCI-Express cards are the easy upgrade ones. When you fall back into AGP, then you have the upgrade issues, but that has nothing to do with PCI-E or AGP, I think it is just because AGP doesn't utilize MXM or Axoim that PCI-E uses. I'm not sure if you can put a real card into an integrated card notebook, though. But if you can, that is a good idea, then you could upgrade to an x300 (or personally I would do the next (feb.) release of the GDDR3 Go6800 (if it is possible to put it in, like with the vga/dvi port issues and all).

So if I'm not too demanding on FPS performance, I can settle for the Intel 900 graphics chip? If I can play CS Source at 1024x768 without too many special effects on like Antialiasing and anisotrophic filtering I'll be fine right?

So if I buy a Dell in Hong Kong, and buy an international warranty for 3 years, will I get to send it to Dell Switzerland for upgrades since I'm planning to take it there. [?]
