    Hi,

I am hoping some expert in this form will help me with their great advice.

I have a dell inpiron 6000 laptop and my battery light keep flashing 4 orange and 1 green sequence. Its been like this since more then 6 months and I was under the impression that my battery is not holding charge and is completely dead. I was using my computer on direct ac power since then but just now I bought a new battery.

Now, the problem is, even if i plug in power supply, the laptop is not charging the battery and the lights keep flashing in the same sequence. With power source plugged in the icon in the system tray shows "0% remaining (charging)"

I thought getting a new battery will help solve the light problem and I should be able to use on a battery power.

I made sure that the battery is properly put in place and I plugged and unplugged couple of times.

Any advice what I should do now?

Thanks for any reply in advance

Are you certain the battery you bought was both genuine and new? What does the BIOS indicate about charge levels and charging status? You might have a motherboard fault rather than a battery fault if the first two check out and the second reports the same. You might also have a fault power supply, but I'd say that's unlikely if your machine is running off AC. In the former case, your only option will be to replace the motherboard.

If your battery really is at 0%, it's probably permanently toast. Lithium ion batteries become irreversibly damaged if they're discharged past a certain point. It's why Windows forces your computer to shut down if you ever get lower than 5% battery.

    Hi Guys,

Commander Wolf Yes the battery that i have bought now is genuine and tested to function properly. It's a second hand battery. I dont know how to check status of battery through BIOS. Any help for that?

I think and I am worried that it might be the motherboard issue. I had my laptop under dell full complete care warranty coverage for 3 years and I did sent my computer to dell last year for fixing the heating and other issues, but never thought there might be any issue with the motherboard : (

At that time I thought it was my battery issue and I thought buying a new battery will fix it but now when I get a second battery the issue is still there and the system is not charging it. Showing it as "0% remaining (Charging)"

As for the power supply, thats working fine. Since thats how I am using my laptop for few months now.

Mastershroom 0% is showing for my new battery which I got tested to make sure its functioning properly. I got my old battery checked thinking the issue is related to battery and if I buy a new one my system will work fine but as I mentioned above I am still facing the same issue.

Thank you both of you for your great input. Appreciate that. I will also check with the dealer I bought the new battery from if he can check my system and find out whats the real problem. Checking with dell will be expensive as my warranty is over already. I will post any more update again.

    :)

When the machine is booting (when you get to the Dell logo), press F2. That'll get you into BIOS. On the Inspiron 6000, you should press Alt + P a few times, and you'll eventually get to a page with battery figures. It should tell you the charge level of your battery(s), the charging status, and the type of AC adapter you're using.

If BIOS is telling you that the battery is not charged and not charging, there's probably something wrong...

    I went into BIOS setup

For battery info it shows Battery 0% charged

For battery health it shows, this battery has experienced a permanent failure and needs to be replaced.

However the same battery i got it checked and its fine. The system is not showing the right info. If I had my old battery plugged in then this message would have make sense.

May be there is something wrong with the motherboard charging unit
