Received as a donation a Dell Inspiron 6000. Replaced the hard drive, installed a new XP OS, Everything looked good at first but there is no ethernet connection. I have tried several cables but that isn't the problem source. Wireless works and the laptop says the wired connection is enabled, still can't connect. I'm not too familiar with this type of problem. Can anyone offer suggestions on how to proceed?

Are you sure the drivers are installed? Right click on My Computer and go to Manage and see if driver is installed in Device Manager

Driver is installed; I wanted to reinstall but without a connection that won't work. :)

Do you see LED's on the ethernet port? Are you sure the ethernet cord/switch works?

The indicator lights at the port are lit. All devices (device manager) list correctly, no yellow marks. IF I choose the network, it says it is working. It isn't though, and my inexperience tells me it is not picking up the correct IP (?) or DNS (?) Local provider was not of any help.
