I bought a Corsair 2GB ram for my laptop inspiron 6000. I watched the video online in some forum on how to install it. My problem however is that i cannot open my computer on the back with the screws. Do you need some special type of screwdriver like a phillips one to open it? I have a bunch of screwdrivers and none work.

Just bring the laptop to your local hardware store and show 'em what you need to open. They'll find something for you.

A #2 Phillips should work--that is what I use. Dell says #1 Phillips, so either one.

dynamic - I hope you bought two 1-Gb chips for your 6000 - not one 2-Gb. I have my daughter's old 6000 here at home now - and just upgraded it from 512-Mb to 2-Gb. The largest chip the mobo will recognize is 1-Gb. It's a great system - I'm going to send it to Parts People for all new plastics/keyboard. They'll upgrade it for $150 ... :)

Are you sure you had the latest BIOS? The 915 chipset should be able to recognize 2GB DIMMs... unless Dell decided to do something funny with the BIOS.

Commander - Good point - the 6000 is currently a beater so I just used two spare 1-Gb chips I had sitting around. I did go to Crucial and they said the max was 1-Gb per slot - but I haven't actually tried a 2-Gb chip. I'm sending it off for the refurb since it runs so well with a clean XP SP3 install and 2-Gb of RAM. Another advantage of getting a Dell - it can be cosmetically refurb'ed for $150. Hopefully the new bottom plastic/base will include new screws on the RAM access door ... ;)

Wait... all this company is doing is replacing your plastics? Maybe you just can't be bothered, but can't this be done on your own at a way, way lower price?

Oh - I think its a pretty good deal - here are the individual parts costs: bottom base plastic (J5364) $29.95, power button cover $12.95, palmrest and touchpad $49.95, LCD front bezel $24.95, LCD back cover w/ hinges $49.95 and keyboard $29.95. The total for the parts - which are fairly priced by e*bay standards, is pennies shy of $198, plus they clean up the fans/mobo, re-assemble and guarantee that it will work when returned. The LCD is kinda dim but they system has some sentimental value as it was my first personal Dell and my daughter used it for all four years of college. She did not perform one iota of maintenance on it from July 2005 until earlier this month - and it booted right up when I received it back; although the battery was toast. I had a spare IDE HDD and a spare battery (which also fits the older XPS's and the Dell Precisions). I figure I'm getting a new computer for around $200 and it is much faster/snappier for common tasks than any Vista system that I own or have used ... :)

My wife has a 6000, but she does not use it very much since I bought her a Studio.

You can buy the screwdriver just about anywhere. They even have them at most grocery stores. They come in many colors. I have a lot of different brands. Stanley is probably the one to go for in most stores.

I wouldn't necessarily trust Crucial for telling you about how much memory your machine can take. I advised them that their website was telling me the max I could have in my current notebook was 4GB, and that this was incorrect. To prove my point, I borrowed two 4GB sticks from a friend and plugged them in, sent them as many screen shots from different software packages. Made me laugh because they just came back with "We've conducted extensive research into what RAM each computer accepts and even on the Dell website it says 4GB maximum", or something like that.

I see one on ebay for 13 dollars shipped. Is that too much to pay since someone hear mentioned pennies or is pennies meaning like 10 dollars?

dynamic - since you live in NYC - is there a Wal-Mart in your area? If there is - then you may be able to get a small computer-repair screwdriver kit for $4 or $5. That said, I think you may be able to find a couple of small screwdrivers for less than that at a Family Dollar or someplace like that. I do see your dilemma though - the cheapest screwdriver set on NewEgg is $44.95!! This set on Amazon is very similar to the set I use: http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Piece-...9?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1255334310&sr=8-9

Dynamic - Sorry to say, but I guess I am the last to realize that your thread, and your repeated bumping of your thread, makes me wonder what you want your fellow forum members to do for you. The screwdriver you need is a very common tool and there isn't anything any of us can do to help you. You simply need to go outside of your abode, find a store, and purchase a small screwdriver. Or, you need to contact one of your friends and borrow a screwdriver. So - again sorry - to answer your question: anyone can help? No, no one can help, you have to go find a small phillips-head screwdriver.

You are running two threads on the same issue.

It is working and the new RAM is installed according to your other thread. Good job!!
