My Inspiron 6000 has a disk access rate of 2MB/sec because it is in the PIO mode. Bios does not allow DMA (grayed out) and is stuck in that dreaded PIO mode.

Hope someone has been there and can help.

Go to Device Manager (Right click My computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager)
Then expand IDEATA/ATAPI Controllers > Primary IDE Channel > Properties > Advanced Settings > Transfer Mode
What is the Current Transfer Mode? Ultra DMA Mode XX or PIO mode ?
If PIO mode, then set the Transfer Mode to "DMA if available".

Uninstalling Secondary IDE channel works for DVD and CD ROMs to switch back to DMA mode when setting "Current Transfer Mode" doesn't work. So if nothing happens even after setting "Current Transfer Mode" to DMA then uninstall Primary IDE channel and reboot.

    Your'e right!!

I blush to admit that, before I read your reply, I found my post on the Dell Company's forum from one year ago. Well, I am 73 what can I say. Anyhow the suggestion by "bacillus" worked as my response shows. Thanks for your concern and your also correct response.

I guess it only takes one "Blue Screen of Death" to get locked into the PIO mode requiring this fix.

From bacillus in another post on this list for “Re: Brand new Inspiron 6000 HD only in PIO Mode?”
“in device manager right click the primary ide channel>uninstall then reboot” .

My problem is solved by this re-installation of the primary IDE channel.. My 6000 is now setup for Ultra DMA Mode 5 like it should be!!
