    Hi,

New member looking and hoping for some info.

My display is not working on my Inspiron 5160. The image is there but very faint. When hooked to an external monitor everything displays properly on the external monitor.

What I am leaning towards is to first replace the LCD inverter. Not sure if I would spend the money on a whole new display for this old of a laptop.

It had been having a over heating problem before the display went out. I took the cooling fan out and cleaned out all the dust mat from the fins that were blocked. Now the fan seems to be keeping it cool, but the display did not come back.

So what are your thoughts on the problem?

Inverter a good place to start?

    Thanks!
    Rod

You check the output of the video card by attaching it to external monitor.

Increasing and decreasing the brightness has no effect in the BIOS as well? If that is the case, it sounds like the inverter.

Yeah, I would try to change brightness both in BIOS, and (just as a check) independently when in your normal OS. On my laptop, I can do this temporarily by Fn+Up, though that might be different on your system.
