I want to max out the memory on my Inspiron 2600(512mb). The documentation states that I have 2 memory slots, one is user accessible and the other in factory configurable. The way I am understanding it, is that each slot can hold 256mb of ram. If I increase the user accessible slot to 256mb, how does the factory cofigurable memory increase to 256mb?

    Thanks

It depends on what your original configuration was. For example, if you ordered 256mb RAM with you system in 2 X 128 mb config, the factory accessible module will contain 128 MB module, and the user accessible slot will contain a 128 module. In this case, you could replace the user accessible slot with a 256 module for 384 MB RAM.

You can change the "factory configured" memory module too. It's just that this module is under the keyboard and not under the laptop itself. Dell's service manual doesn't specifically tell you how to replace this module, but it tells you how to get to the mainboard and replacing the "factory configured" module from there should be easy.
