Hello, I am new and not exactly a forum person.
I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop that has developed a problem. When you hit the "a" key, you get "az", when you hit the "z" key, you get "az".
When you hit the "s" key, you get "sx", and so on across the board. I posed the question on another forum, and got the normal "we will answer your question for $26." So I paid the $26 and got " we really don't know what causes this, you may have a faulty keyboard." So I went onto Amazon and ordered a keyboard. Two weeks and $16 later, I returned home from California and my keyboard was here. I installed it. The new keyboard acts the same, only on different keys. "a" still gets "az", "s" works okay, "j" gets "jm" and I have the same problem.

The short of it is, I'm getting ready to throw the Dell in the trash. Does anyone out there have any suggestions?

If the new keyboard didn't solve the issue, then it's probably a fault with the keyboard controller on the motherboard. And unless you want to replace that, the cost of which is probably close to that of the laptop itself, you're better off scrapping the machine or parting it out on eBay. It's still probably worth about $50 to $100 in parts.

Thank you for your input. It makes sense. After I got the $26 reply from the pros, I plugged my keyboard from my desktop into the laptop and started excel. It worked like it should, so your explanation makes sense regarding the controller on the motherboard -- since that is hardwired to the keyboard on the laptop. Having the double key input makes it impossible to log onto any program that requires a password, so scrapping it out seems like the next step. I'll probably start with an ad on Craigslist. Thanks again.
