Hello, once again I am having trouble with my laptop. Recently the desktop is taking ages to load at start-up and for a few minutes I am stuck looking at a black screen. Also, when closing the lid I am unable to open the lid and restore my previous session. Although I am not sure if this is directly related but it seems to only deter me from restoring the session if the computer has been plugged in, otherwise the laptop comes back exactly as it was. I have tried reinstalling the video driver twice, both times doing a complete clear and removing all registries tied to them, this has not solved my problem. I would appreciate any help you could offer me. If there is any information you need about my computer to further help me feel free to ask and I will reply as soon as possible.

I'm sorry that I did not have the time to type out every single detail concerning my computers specifications as I was in class. I would appreciate it if you could refrain from posting useless things as they are not at all helping me in fixing my problem. I must also say I have no idea as to what you mean, your lack of grammar is confusing me.

So as to not have this happen again, my computers is obviously a Dell Inspiron 1720. The specifications to this computer are as follows.

    Windows Vista Home Premium
    3 Gigabytes of RAM
    Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT
2.00 Gigahertz Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 CPU

If any other information is required please ask, preferably in a helpful manner as I would like this problem resolved if possible.

i would restore to an earlier date, and if that does no solve it....restore the factory image as it came from the factory...so if you have a software problem , this should solve it....if you still have a problem after doing what i suggested, then you might have a hardware problem

In situations like this, I would highly suggest a complete reinstallation of windows. You may have multiple issues with your machine which is something that is exactly hard to pinpoint and that is best to do so.

Initial factory restore is also advisable as all the pre-installed drivers and softwares are already in the partitioned recovery in your drive. However personally I never liked Dell's factory restore as they pre-load alot of bloatware and unnecessary software in your machine thus slowing it down.

But before doing something drastic, I would highly suggest that you do the following to your machine first:

I noticed you had a black screen at times even after opening the lid. Try changing your GPU driver to the latest update from LaptopVideo2Go.com. I would like to know where did you obtained the GPU drivers from? Besides, registry editing is not the only solution to solve a GPU related issue.

Also, since you have changed GPU drivers before it's highly recommended to uninstall your older GPU first and then, obtain your GPU drivers from there and reinstall it. Make sure you follow the instructions clearly.

And.. what antivirus software are you using? Scan for viruses. They're prone to slow startups and etc. You may also try running hijackthis to see what suspicious processes is running at the background.

Oh and also to point out; did you use any registry cleaner before? Because some horrible free ones out there, and albeit never-heard-before registry cleaners can also cause your system to drastically slow down especially on startups due to many reasons in which I will not go in here.

If all else fails I would highly recommend a complete reinstall. And take good care of that machine from now on. And if you're a hands-on tech savvy type I highly suggest upgrading your CPU and HDD as well.

EDIT: I have seen your similar post somewhere before in this forum about the 1720 having GPU issues. And now it's having a slow startup time? My advice; it's clearly a re-installation of windows.

    Hope this helps.

That happens on my 1720 only when I choose Balanced or power saver option for my battery.

Stop resurrecting old threads if you have nothing to add to the conversation. It's even worse when your advice is incorrect...
