I have an Inspiron 1720 and lately the display started to have some problems. After waking up the screen from standby mode, it would have a red-pinkish hue for some seconds but that was all. A few days later, all of a sudden the screen simply flickered and died altogether. I shone a flashlight on it to see if the liquid crystal display had stopped working completely but fortunately it was still working.

I found out that keeping the screen on half the brigthness or less would keep it working, although it would also have this annoying red hue all over it. Turning up the brightness results in the screen going dark almost immediately. To make it work again, I have to close the lid (with the power management options set to turning the screen off when lid is closed) and opening it again.

All this seems to be the ccfl's fault instead of the inverter. I will have to order a new ccfl but although I've looked for what ccfl model Inspiron 1720's use, the only thing I could find was sites that simply sell ccfls "for Inspiron 1720's". This isn't the same thing and I would prefer to know the actual model name for the ccfl instead of trusting a random merchant.

    Can anyone help?

Edit: Just saw that I wrote lamb instead of lamp in the title. Is there any way to change this?

Generally backlight aren't replaceable (some cases impossible) and isn't recommended. You can get a WUXGA from the Vostro 1700 for ~150-170 online.

Why do you say that the backlights are not replaceable? There are quite a few guides out there on how to do it. More info?

Does anyone know any trustworthy sites for buying ccfls? I have trouble locating the exact part number for the lamp, since there are four different ones for Inspirons 1720 with wxga+.

They're always replaceable. It's just a matter of how much of a pain it is and how likely you are to mess up your screen in the process either by means of physical damage or dust.

Personally I think the best way to go about this is to find like a cracked, parts LCD with a good backlight of similar or identical make to yours. Then you only have to swap the actual panels and you don't have to deal with the diffuser layers, etc.

Otherwise if you want to go for the full tear-down, just search like "1720 backlight" on eBay, and anything should work.
