I have a dell inspiron 1720 and i am wanting to put either windows 7 or 8 on. I have upgraded my BIOS to A09 sometime ago but now want to upgrade from vista. Is there any way this can be done without losing and files or programs????

You should be able to do an upgrade install to 7 from Vista. I don't remember what's the deal with 8 and Vista.

I mean, you really need to go through and look at the feature sets of each version... nobody but you can tell you what you need. If you don't know what any of the features are, you will probably be fine with Starter or Home Basic or whatever they call it.
