    Hi All,

Well, I recieved a Dell Insipron 1720 for graduation. I've been having some mild problems with it, all of which Dell has been unable to fix.

Files on my laptop will randomly corrupt themselves. I play a few games, some of which have data files of up to 3 gigs. These files seem to corrupt the most often, getting errors such as "Failed to Read Data". So far, I've worked with dell to determine that it isn't:

    RAM
    Vista Installation
    HD
    Processor
    Mother Board

So, what could be causing it? I've reformatted the computer, with the same problem afterwards. I'm tempted to use the Vista Ultimate downgrade rights to go back to XP, but haven't decided fully on that yet. Thanks for your help in advance!

Seems like a driver issue to me. Which game are you playing that gets the files corrupted. Also post your system specs, would like to know the graphics card.

I had a similar issue when i first got my 1720 and it was (in my case) the RAM. I know you said it's not the RAM, but did Dell sit on the phone for the entire 30 minutes that it takes to run the *full* RAM diagnositcs test? That's what my issue was, and it wasn't until I ran the full RAM test that the problem was uncovered. You may try that - even when the diagnostics says "everythings ok, do you want to continue testing?" - say "yes" It could prove to be well-worth your time. Write down the error code if you get one and call Dell back. They'll promptly send someone to fix it :)
