Hi, I am having another problem with my laptop. Whenever I close the computer it will crash. Upon re-opening it I am greeted with the BIOS loading screen and the the message telling me my computer was not properly shut down. I'm not really sure why this happens. If anyone has had this problem and knows how to fix it, please tell me. Thanks.

When you say close the computer, do you mean when you close the lid down to the keyboard, or do you mean when you shutdown the computer?

Closing the lid down to the keyboard. Also In addition the last few times, the computer has been very slow to start up, with a few times the screen not displaying any image at all.

There are many things that can cause something like this.

First, I would like to ask, what is the model of your computer's video card. I believe your computer can feature either an Intel or nVidia video card(namely the Intel X3100 or nVidia 8400m or 8600m).

Also, is your computer set to turn off or hibernate or go into stand by when the lid is closed?

Another thing you can try for the time being is next time you turn on the computer, hold Fn while pressing the power button to turn it on and Dell Diagnostics should open and be able to diagnose any more obvious hardware issues.

I have the nVidia 8600m, and the computer is set to sleep when the lid closes.

The problem lies once again, is driver issue. It fails to awake itself from sleep mode. This again, has happened to my 1720. Apparently, I am now using different drivers instead of the new 182.20 drivers. I am facing the same problems with the new driver. I'm now 177.79, (much older though) but it seems more stable and the sleep mode problems are gone.

Oh yeah and a gentle reminder to follow the driver installations carefully on the laptopvideo2go; don't miss a step.... Best is to use driver cleaner to wipe out the older/last installed drivers if you can.

Slow startups is probably causes by a few things. It's sometimes good to do a complete re-install of the OS. Also, check your 1720 for viruses and etc.

BTW, have you ran the hardware diagnostics test I said in the other post earlier to check if it were hardware issue?

I have indeed ran such a check, no hardware problems to speak of. I also did follow the instructions on the site to the letter when I installed the new driver.
