In the "Design Overview" of the Dell Inspiron 1720 on Dell.ca, it clearly says that the 1720 is capable of 7.1 channel sound without a matrix decoder. Frankly, I don't believe this, however if anyone out their has recieved their 1720, please post to confirm my theory, or just vote in the poll.

Why does this have to be a poll  there is only going to be one answer.

You do know that you can post a thread without always making it a poll , right ? :p ;)

I think it would be done via software.

For 7.1 channel sound, four 3.5 mm stereo jack outputs are required. Unless Dell means it's output through a SPDIF or optical interface, if it exists on the laptop.

I think it has a S/PDIF out, you can use the DELL "S-Video to TV-Component Cable with SPDIF Adapter". Even E1705 had a S/PDIF pass through for 5.1 movies.

Well that's just great on Dell's part (as usual). Misinforming people is quite serious, especially if someone ends up purchasing the 1720 with 7.1 channel audio being a factor. I don't know if that can be reason to file a lawsuit... lol.

You can output 7.1 through the spdif no problem.

But if you want steller multi channel sound...pony up for the SB Card that goes into the mini slot...about $75. Much better for games and movies. Plan of getting one for my I9300....

If SPDIF is only pass-through (decoding done externally) then that will only work with movies (DVDs with Dolby digital/DTS). For other applications like games using EAX there is no way to get out a 7.1 surround output. At least that is what I think. So in reality it is not a true 7.1 card.
