Hi There!
I´ve got the Dell 1720 Inspiron since 2 years ago.
No problems until these 2 past weeks. I use to play the NBA 2k10 with my laptop since last december, and everything goes right, but from last 2 weeks, if I play more than 3 or 4 games (15min. per game), the laptop shuts down by itself. I´ve checked the CPU and GPU temperatures with Everest, and with this game running they get 70-77 degrees...It´s not so hot, is it?
The fan normally gets fast in short periods of time, but it´s not at highest speed during the game...
I don´t know how to improve the heat contro; I´ve update the BIOS, Graph. drivers and so...
Any ideas?
Thanks

Did you see any error messages when the laptop shuts down by itself? Did you scan for viruses and all sorts? 70 - 77 degrees while for most laptops is considered pretty much the standard, but I know it can get way much lower in the 50s to mid 60s for the 1720.
When was the last time you cleaned up your laptop for dust? You need to do that frequently every 6 months as dust build-up in your heatsink is a common culprit for temperature raise. -
If your comfortable taking apart the laptop, you can clean it better that way. And while your in it, replace the CPU thermal paste.

No error messages before shutting down. The screen just goes black and then ...off.
Any video tutorial or how-to-pics to help me openning the laptop?
Thanks -

Instructions are at Dell's. It's fairly easy to open if you follow the instructions carefully and not miss a step. I think it's essential for all 1720 owners who want to achieve a maximum maintainable unit.

I just cleaned my Inspiron 1720 last Tuesday and replaced the cooling paste for Arctic Silver. It took me 1,5 hour. I know it can be done more quick, but I like to do it nice and clean. Just take your time.
I use a small paint-brush and a vacuum-cleaner to clean the heat-sinks from the CPU and GPU and unscrew the fan.
I hope this will solve your problem. -
Just get your heatsink cleaned and the thermal paste replaced(If u can't do it urself). It would work like NEW again.
