Hi melody, thanks for your replay. By paying more attention, i discovered that i notice the flicker only when i'm running in battery mode. If the charger is plugged everithing's normal. Try to check it out.
About the bad color mixing, i see that too, but i don't think it a screen resolution problem. It's more about how the image is rendered and the number of colours (i guess).

So, any solution to the pixelation in dark backgrounds? because i don't observer it on my desktop and other laptops. Even on those normal 720p displays, the mixing is smooth

Referring to windows media player, i can see the colour bands even on my older laptop (screen res 1366x768). What i think is that this banding is caused by the format or the compression of the images shown. I doubt there's a post processing eleboration of the images. The application like win media player just open a stored image, which probably has a colour bit depth, not too depth. Look at this. There you can see how (in pre processing, not post processing) the visible effect of the colour bands is removed in gradients, even mantainig the image bit depth. So i guess ther's no solution, because it's not an hardware issue.
If you find something different, let us know.

Did you check if the flicker disappear if the charger is plugged in?

Had my 15R SE for almost 1 year now and since new its had a "loud" fan problem.

The fan basicall alternates between 0 RPM and 4200 ~ 4600 RPM, but never in between.

It usually sits on 4200+ RPM and is rather loud... temps on the CPU are low, as is memory and other temps.

Anyone else experienced this? I've had no time to get Dell to have a look at it... but I have the 3 year extended next day business warranty so not too worried about it expiring next month (12 months old now)

The only other issue I've had is the laptop blue screen's quite often when I have a DVD/CD in the slot drive, this is with various discs and it also usually fails burning CD's or DVD's.
I believe the optical drive might be on its way out.

Speedfan I found has no proper gradual control over the fan on the 15RSE and using a cooler should not be necessary!

    Have you tried calling Dell?

Not really, temps don't go THAT high and if i let it idle it doesn't spin up the fan...

PD: speedfan works! you have to enable the dell notebook option in the options menu

hi guys and hello to all as this is my first post

im in the uk and have this laptop coming to me on tuesday i wonder if you can help re all the problems with getting the 7730m to work as i have read certain drivers disable the intel and also windows updates bork the driver

am i right in thinking i need to do the following

do a windows update so the latest intel driver is loaded

then uninstall amd driver and reinstall the latest 13.5 beta which seem to work fine i hear

then disable windows update so that the intel driver does not re update

its the intel driver im not sure on as i hear stories that you need to keep the original intel driver thats on there from dell but you can install the latest amd beta driver which also installs a driver for the intel but then you have to roll back to the intel driver.

need this to work so i dont have to rma if anyone can help id be much appriciated

Folllow the instructions on this site, ignore the other guides about faffing around uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, just follow these and you'll have ccc 13.4

Hi bigjonnyauk. I've tried the leschcat driver (don't remember the version) but i can tell you i had to restore the computer to factory condition. I've red about people who resolved graphic issue whith those driver. Anyway i suggest you to use the leshcat manual to learn how to perform a clean installation of the amd driver.

Many people have lots of issues with amd graphics card because they don't properly uninstall and re-install the driver. As you did, i red many comments about the not working 7730m, but if you do the things properly, there won't be any problem.

Whenever you want to install new amd driver, you have to follow the steps of the leschat manual (uninstall, use driver fusion, reinstall). You have to do that even everytime you install newer intel grephics driver (even from win update). That's because the amd grphics drivers need "to adapt" themselves to the intel.

I finish suggesting you to use the amd driver from the dell site. I've tried the official amd 13.4. They worked fine as long as i tried to roll back to the ones on the dell site (maybe only bad luck).

    bye

hey aberto thanks for the reply i understand what your saying i have used amd products a lot and am ok with using driverfusion to remove all amd stuff this is my planned plan of action when my laptop arrives what do you think mate

1.first do a complete windows update and update everything
    2. download latest intel driver and amd 13.5 beta (suppose to be very good )
    3 . disable windows update
    4. disable automatic driver updates in windows 8
5 uninstall intel and amd drivers
6 run driver fusion and remove any remnants left from amd
    7. restart laptop
    8 install latest intel driver
9 run driver fusion again incase anything left
    10 restart laptop
    11. install the amd 13.5 beta drivers
    12 restart laptop
13 keep the windows updates and driver updates turned off and just update manual myself .

Sounds like a good plan. The only thing i wouldn't do (only to save time) is uninstalling the intel's driver at point 5. They will automatically overwrite previous version when you install the new ones.

yeah thought that myself but then thought if new intel file is slightly different and there is some old files left over knowingmy luck they will clash ,this way i will know its been done cleanly.

well laptop should be here tuesday so ill report back then aberto thanks for looking in mate .

hopefully if this works fine then other can benefit.

ps whats the best way to test the card works

run a game in battery saving mode, then run it again on full power with the exe set to performance in the ccc

As you say. Maybe when you run i battery saving mode, in ccc choose energy saving. Depending on the game, you'll notice great changes.

When the pc is ready could you check if you notice the flicker mentioned some posts before? Here's what i ask you to do. With the charger plugged in, open, for example, adobe reader (not a pdf, just the application) or another dark background program, then unplug the charger. Let me know if you notice some kind of flicker. It could be noticiable even when you plug in the charger again. Thank you

Got my 7520 a couple of hours ago and I just have some questions:

There seems be a hidden partition which takes up 12GB of space on the drive and I was wondering if that is needed.

Is it possible to open the laptop from the bottom to get access to the cpu and gpu?

Can I uninstall all the Dell programs such as backup and recovery (and it's support software), digital delivery and support center?

My cpu temperature at idle hovers around the mid 40's (Celsius) and sometimes in the low 50's is this ok when the ambient temperature is 18C?
I can't seem to find the temperature of the 7730m either in HWMonitor or when running FurMark, the former doesn't even acknowledge that I have a gpu though the latter does mention 7700m series.

There are 4 lights at the front of the laptop (power, hdd, battery, wireless) not sure if it's working as intended but the battery light never seems to come on either on mains power or on battery.

It contains the factory default os. If you'll have problem in the future you can restore the pc from that partition, so, don't touch it

Yes you can, but i suggest you to explore them and then decide what to do. Someone may find them helpful, somebody else useless.

Look at this to compare the temperature. Can't help for the rest

The battery led is usually off, unless the battery is almost empty (orange led) or if the battery is charging and it's not full (white led)

I can't also know the video card temp, when I use the diagonstic tool from boot menu the CPU sensor gives a fine reading but the video sensor gives a constant reading of 2 degree C, I don't know is it a aproblem?

I seem to be having an issue where the WiFi will disconnect and reconnect within a couple of seconds, it didn't bother me that much at first but it happened on more than one occasion when I was downloading large files and had to start them all over again.

I've followed a number of instructions from the Dell Community site but the problem still persists.

Apologies if there is a solution to this, in my initial search I couldn't find anything that was of help.

Just thought that I would post an update if anyone else is having this problem.

When I received the laptop I updated the Intel wireless driver to 15.8 but once the problem started I uninstalled them and the system has reverted to the 15.5.6.48 driver that I think the laptop came with originally. It's been a couple of days now and I haven't had a single disconnect yet (touch wood).

On a different note, I like to clean the fan of any laptop I use every 3 months and all the ones I've had so far have had easy access to said part but I'm a little confused about how to get access to it. Also, where is the air intake?

You cannot see the temp for 7730 unless it is running. You can see the temperature using HWMonitor under Intel HD Graphics.
Mine after having the laptop for 8-9months idle around 48-52C during gaming 60-64C

Yeah I actually figured that out by accident one day and I realised that it was the temperature for the 7730m because it went to 0C as soon as I was done gaming.

You wouldn't have any experience with opening up the laptop do you?
Heat management is important for me because I get sent off to a number of places where temperatures are in the low to mid 30's (Celsius) indoors and I have a thing about keeping temperatures as low as possible.

I do have experience with opening the laptops and actually did thermal past and shim of the GPU and CPU on my XPS 1558. It was some effort and so I would not recommend unless your laptop is out of warranty.
Helped that laptop for 6 more months but it eventually died. During games the GPU was going to high 90s(paste bought it to high 80s).

I have used 5 different Dell laptops(XPS, Studio and Inspirion) and this by far has the best heat management capabilities. I am not sure why you are so concerned with heat as this is cool as a cucumber. My 1558 used to have a super hot touch pad most of the time and this one you cannot even feel any heat.

Right click on your desktop, click on configure switchable graphics, add the application and select high performance in graphics settings. For me this works but some people do have issues.

To see if the 7730m is working download HWMonitor and/or HWiNFO64, run the program which will use the dedicated gpu and then run either of the programs that I mentioned, with the former you'll get a temperature reading for the HD4000 but it's actually for the 7730m because once you're done using it the temperature reading will go down to 0C as the gpu is turned off. With the latter you'll get the full details of the gpu and if the 7730m is turned off you'll get the details of the HD4000.

    Hope this helps.

Has anyone who owns this laptop gotten inside it to clean the fan? I've never been inside it yet but I've been looking for maybe a guide or something on what exactly I need to unscrew caust it's a little more complicated than other laptops I have worked with and I don't want to do something wrong.

    HI,

Does anyone know how capable this laptop is ( the i5 version) is with gaming? List of modern games it can run on good settings.

Also, can someone tell me if this laptop ( the i5 version) can run Rome 2 Total War, and if so, how well?

    Thanks for the help!

Anybody know of this laptop changing brightness on its own. I've already made sure the ambient light sensor thing is turned off but its still changing its brightness on its own. Happens if its plugged in or not. The brightness goes up and down depending on what im doing on the laptop e.g. in movies in dark scenes it goes brighter...

    any idea's guys?

Hi, it was exactly the problem i had. It's caused by an option in the graphic properties of the intel video card. Follow this steps (my language it's not english, and some translations might be different). Go to the intel graphics and media control panel. Select advanced mode. Go to energy saving and in the upper right corner select battery. The checkbox monitor energy saving tecnology it's what causes the effects you see. Unselect and apply. I chose to keep it selected... bye

I think it is capable to play most games in medium setting. The issue is not i5 but the 7730 which may limit some of th every new games especially at high setting.

Anyone knows any significant benefits to go from A04 to A10?

What video drivers is everyone using?

I want to try BF4 on this laptop (sold my game pc last year) and possibly Skyrim.

I've got old drivers from February 2013, doubt these would cut it with the latest BF4 and other games.
These are the ones I have:
    2/21/2013 8.951.9.1000, A04

From the Dell AU website, nothing newer listed and I've heard you cant just download intel/AMD drivers either....

Also no BIOS updates on Dell AU website, still on A04?

Leshcat's drivers, I found it improved my FPS a fair amount and was definately worth the slight hassle in installing it.

I'm thinking about upgrading my screen to a 1080p version (I've read AUO B156HW01 V.4 works well) but I doubt I'll have the 40 pin LVDS cable I need. Can I use any 40pin LVDS cable or does it have to be the part number R4WW7? Because its very difficult to find anywhere in the UK :/

My fan keeps running at full speed after I installed Windows 8.1 CPU usage is 1%-3%, so it's basically sitting idle. Anyone have an idea? :(
