can you tell us what manufacturer and model of memory and msata drive you have installed
thankyou -
Well, I didn't exactly pick this brand mSATA drive. This laptop was a warranty replacement for a damaged unit. The old unit hat a 256GB SSD and I insisted they include that in the new model. They ended up replacing the mSATA with a Lite-On LMT-256M3M.
-
I picked up an Inspiron 15R SE 7520 a few months ago. I wiped the drive, and I am running 64-bit Ubuntu Linux.
The Dell Utilities software is pretty good - it runs the fan, and the cpu speed-step, brightness, function keys, etc. It does not handle the three special buttons in the upper-right corner of the keyboard (I'm not actually sure what they're for - I think they're documented, but since I don't use them, and they don't work in Linux - I've forgotten). The unit does tend to run a bit hot; anywhere from 45 C to occasionally 70 C to 71 C. If I manually use the CPU Frequency Scaling Indicator control to set the CPU speed to 1.2 GHz, it rarely climbs over 50 C. So it's the Dell Utilities' Kernel extension which automatically manages temperature, which seems to be a little bit less aggressive than it should be. There are configuration files that are supposed to cause the fan to work harder at lower temperatures, but i8kfan doesn't seem to respond to it. The CPU Frequency does not remember it's mode through a sleep-cycle, and always re-sets to 2.10 GHz.
I love they keyboard, (and the backlight) - it's probably the best laptop keyboard I've ever typed on.
I don't think I have a bluray drive though. I didn't realize these were supposed to come with a bluray. Maybe I do have one, but it doesn't play bluray disks under linux? -

LMSensors:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fan_Speed_Control
(this must first be set-up with the "sensors-detect" command, and you walk through the scripted steps to configure the sensors)
This seemed to do a pretty decent job of controlling fan speed most of the time. It will wind-up and down.
But I think it's not aggressive enough, and generally, the laptop does run hot, especially when the ATI is running. (more on that later).
Also install "cpufreq" - which is an indicator control which allows you to set the CPU speed. (until you sleep - then it gets reset to max again). Keeping your cpu speed at 1.2 GHz if you're not doing any intensive work is the most important thing for heat and battery life.

I also tried a tool called "gkrellem" but that did not work at all.

AMD Catalyst
(make sure you're following the right distro!)
I have found two ways to switch to the Intel graphics:
1. use the command-line (vgaswitcheroo)
2. use the radio-button in the ATI control panel (which is installed with the driver) "AMD Catalyst Control Center".
(however; method 2 actually freezes the computer, and when it reboots, it's still in AMD-graphics-mode - so obviously, AMD's control panel isn't completely working right).
I use the ATI/AMD graphics, because I am using the Unity 3D interface. But if you're not, I think a significant savings in battery life and heat can be had by simply shutting it off.
Of course, the way I can confirm whether the Intel or ATI graphics is running, is when I reboot Ubuntu, the Compiz 3d interface won't work at all under the Intel, so it falls back to the 2d. Under System Properties, it won't report the Display Type as AMD Radeon 7700 HD either. Under Ubuntu 12.04 and later, it's basically very inconvenient to not have a good 3d display driver; if you're using their default window manager. (I'm not sure exactly why I'm not running Mint. . . ).
One other issue, about the fan speed control, is that I have not been able to get the updated bios to install.
Dell is not maintaining Linux updaters.
Their Windows-based updaters say to boot to DOS to run the .exe file. I have tried both FreeDOS and Rufus based USB boot drives, and their BIOS updater won't run under DOS, so I think that I'll need to boot to WinPE, or something like that? But better cooling-management is supposedly a feature in the a04 BIOS. -
Does anyone use intel wireless display to connect to a wirless adapter? I have just bought the netgear push2tv hd. Unfortunately, it is not working. Any ideas? Thank you in advance!

Bios only sees 8GB but system recognizes full 16GB. I checked it under both Resource Monitor and System Info. -
When you say the damaged unit had a 256gb ssd was that a msata or sata device and did you purchase that yourself or did it come with it installed ?
Well thankyou for telling me what msata drive is working on the 15r se , i want to get a 256gb msata ssd but have read the crucial 128gb and 256gb msata ssd do not work with the inspiron 15r se so was trying establish which drives do work
cheers -
-
So i have doing my research reading various forums i can not remember which forum but someone had said they could not get the crucial 256gig drive to works oh and remember someone on the dell technical forum had said when a crucial 128g drive was plugged in the laptop it would just beep when turned on
Re: Dell Inspiron 15R SE 7520, mSATA replacement advice - Laptop General Hardware Forum - Laptop - Dell Community
Crucial just happens to be the easiest cost effective msata ssd to get hold of in the uk so PITA
Also i have found out through reading that other manufacturers have compatibility issues with certain models of msata ssd due to the controller used like lenovo. So i have been hesitant in a purchase in fear of it not working and not being able to return the it and because of the long process of installing the drive it is not like you can check easily, hence all my questions -
-
does anyone know what specific bluetooth device this has installed? Device manager just says "generic bluetooth adapter". I'm trying to pair it to my android phone, but it's not working...
-
If you know anyone who has used Crucial CT256M4SSD3 256GB or 128GB CT128M4SSD3 on the 15r se and you could get back to me that would very helpful as my machine arrived today i need to book the engineer to install the msata daughter card and i thought i would get the one of the msata ssd before he comes so i could get the dell engineer to install it
thanks -
For the initial pairing, one of the devices must be discoverable. By default, both the computer and phone is not. Go into your phone's wireless settings and click under Bluetooth "make discoverable". You have 2 minutes now. Quickly have your computer search for devices. It should pop up. If not, try making your computer discoverable and have your phone search for the computer. -

Hello everyone,
After doing a lot of research I´ve just decided to buy the Dell 15r SE. I have to buy it off Amazon because I am not in the US and that´s the only place that would take my credit card.
This is the one I am planning to get : Dell Inspiron Special Edition i15Rse-1667ALU 15-Inch Laptop
A couple of questions:
-I see everyone mention that they are getting the Dell i15R SE 7520. What does the 7520 number refer to? The one on Amazon says i15Rse-1667ALU
-If you see the amazon tech specs, they say this laptop has a 1366x768 pixel display. Then in the bottom it says 15.6" Full HD Widescreen (1900 x 1080, 1080p). The PDF they link to from Dell also says 1080p display. I assume that the 1366x768 is wrong?
- How easy would it be to add a Blu-ray player later on?
I am basically just waiting to press the buy now button on this laptop. Hope to get it before Christmas Day!
Thanks,
Rafael -
This model has the lower 720p screen (1366x768), not the 1080p. For me, this is a deal-breaker, but it may not be as important to you. In the US there are 4 15R SE options. The cheapest one ($799) has the 720p, i5, 6GB RAM, and no mSATA drive. It is also likely that the internal daughter board will not have the port for an mSATA either.
As far as the 7520 number, I think it is so Dell can differentiate between model releases and years. So next year they may offer a new Inspiron 15R SE, with a different design, and they will change the second model number. They leave it off their online descriptions to not be confusing. I don't know why it says 1667ALU. It may be a model number used for units sold by dealers other than Dell. There's not much about it online.
I can't say about a blue-ray later. It is part of the external case of the laptop, so you will probably need to buy the exact one made for this model laptop. If that is not a problem, then switching the drives is very easy. If you plan to play Blue-Ray movies, you will also need software than can decode them. Dell includes the player with laptops that have BR, but I don't know if it does for those that don't. They may have changed recently, but last I checked all the popular free media players had to be customized a bit to work with BR discs. -

Within the first 2 weeks of owning the brand new XPS 15 I had 3 service calls to replace parts. Then I had to ship it to the repair depot. My XPS 15 was a piece of garbage loaded with problems, so I requested that they just send me the Inspiron 15R SE instead. My profile pic is of the XPS 15 with an external wifi antenna taped to the back because the internal wifi was horrible. They sent me the best 15R SE option, to come as close to my broken XPS 15 L501x as possible. I then switched out the 32GB mSATA for the 256GB mSATA. So after 2.5 months of headaches, I finally had a working laptop. It already had the mSATA drive in it, so the daughter board already had the mSATA port. I know nothing about ordering that part, but I read another person outside the US that was able to order one. Sorry I can't be of more help. If you don't get the model with the mSATA port, then they give you a 5400 RPM regular HDD. That is slow. The hard drive is basically the weakest link in a laptop's speed and it is being further compromised by using a 5400 RPM drive, rather than a 7200 RPM (or SSD). So then you can live without the mSATA, find a way to buy the correct daughter board, or just buy a 15R SE that comes with an mSATA. -
I just bought the Inspiron 15R SE 7520 with 32GB msata this week. I want to do a dual boot with Windows 8 (about 300GB) and Linux Mint/Ubuntu (remaining space). I read through most of the pages from the beginning and I read some people did just linux install or some with Linux and Win 7. Can anyone provide a quick summary of how they did this? or anyone have a how to anywhere? I don't mind keeping the existing win8 with mcafee etc...from dell but can do a new fresh reload if necessary.
A few quick questions:
1) Is the SRT and RST benefits on the Windows side only? or can the Linux benefit from this?
2) Do i need to change bios options at any point? I notice I can't boot from dvd/cd if its on the UEFI setting. Switching to legacy allowed me to boot from a live cd but then the next day Win 8 wouldn't boot until I set the bios back to UEFI settings.
3) Are there any temperature or fan issues under linux to deal with afterwards?
TIA -
I have now found this 1080p model on Amazon.com , but no indication of whether or not it has the mSATA port.
I am definitely interested in upgrading to an SSD down the road. Is there any way to tell, without actually opening the laptop, if it has the mSATA port? Maybe I can ask some of the Amazon.com reviewers.
Thanks again for the very detailed answer! -
-
Ah that´s a shame, I really wanted to get an SSD...guess I could perform the card replacement myself later on.
Thanks again! -

So, pretty much any laptop you buy will have a 2.5" form factor SATA port. There are many options for both SSD and non-SSD discs to use that port. The advantage of also having the mSATA is to either utilize Intel SRT or just for the usefulness of having two internal storage locations inside the laptop. And if you installed an SSD at the regular SATA port, there is no point in using Intel SRT, and basically cancels any benefit Dell advertises for it. That's one of the reasons they have the cheaper hard discs paired with the mSATA units.
A normal hard disc drive (rotating disc) is cheap and slow. They can speed up the computer a little by using the Intel SRT (which also needs an mSATA drive). You can increase the laptops speed further by simply not using a hard disc and using an SSD.
So what if you have both ports and want the fastest speed? This is why people are putting larger mSATA drives in. You can completely install Windows on the mSATA SSD and have the second internal drive just for extra storage. So why upgrade the mSATA drive instead of the drive in the 2.5" SATA port? Because you can buy much higher capacity hard discs that fit the 2.5" form factor for pretty cheap compared to the larger capacity SSDs. So you pay more money for an mSATA drive just big enough to run Windows on and benefit from pure SSD operation. Then you still have the large capacity disc on the other port for pure storage purposes.
There are different speed ratings for different mSATA versions, but I'm not going to get into that. -
Have just received my 15R SE with i7 processor, 1TB HDD and 32Gb msata board. So far (1 day) I'm very happy with it . For those of you who have changed the main disk with a SSD-driver, could you tell me if:
1) the battery last (much) longer on one charge?
2) there is a significant improvement on heat / fan?
On one hand I'll love a quieter and faster SSD, but on the other hand 1TB gives me a lot "storage room", so I can't decide what is best for me.
PS. I did have one issue, after the first shut down of the system, it won't start up and hang on Dell logo. I searched the internet and solved it with the advice from this link:
Inspiron 15R SE can't boot with Intel Smart Response and Legacy Mode - Laptop General Hardware Forum - Laptop - Dell Community -
I'm currently using a small ssd in the main drive bay and the HDD in the dvd drive bay, with an adapter. I can't comment on heat/battery life changes because I didn't use the standard laptop for more than 30 minutes, but I can give you a quick overview of pro and cons of both approaches.
First thing first, the SSD setup is amazingly fast. You probably read the same thing in hundreds of posts, but until you try it you'll never know what you're missing. On the other hand, more storage space always comes in handy, it all depends on your average usage scenario. You could always buy an external usb enclosure to fit the mechanical disk after the swap: this way, you can retain the storage with the added flexibility of an indipendent enclosure.
I think noise would noticeably decrease, but it's irrelevant if you don't work in extremely quiet places. I can't comment on battery life, but I imagine the hdd impact is negligible if compared to, for example, the FHD screen. But I could be wrong, so I suggest to wait for a more competent opinion. -
Hi everyone.
I've been an happy user of the Dell inspiron 7520 for about a month now. I'm french and bought it on the fr dell website with 1TB drive and no ssd cache.
I was wondering if there was a way to know the version of the daughterboard that handle mstata port (N7JHH) without tearing the computer down ?
I've been searching throug this thread but I did not find any answer
As the msata version was handling an extra chip I could figure It might be displayed by an application, intel storage software or bios, or system panel.
In the bios, the option for intel rapid storage is present but not selectable (greyed).
Thank you fior your attention,

Hello all,
Just purchased a Dell Inspiron 15R SE (15 inch version) in the UK.
I was wondering if there is a Windows 7 clean install guide on the forum (to get rid of Dells bloatware)
I have the service tag link for the drivers but would prefer to use the manufacturers if possible.
Any help is appreciated. -

Does anyone know if this has Intel Widi technology? I want to buy a Push2TV so I can mirror my laptop display on my 60" TV, but I can't seem to find if this computer (7520 - 15r Special Edition) has widi. Thanks!
-
Yes 15R SE has the WIDI and I have used it on my samsung TV. Works quite well only downside is that if you use it as a second screen it is a pain as there is a lag on the second screen.
But ifyou use it as an duplicate screen is should be much easier to use.
There is a driver/program in the download section of the WIDI 15R SE section. -
Domdidom (Dominique) had "grieved" that his computer didn't come with msata, neither a daughterboard supporting it. He did manage though to get a daughter board suppoting both (see page 87 in this thread). I know he's from France as well, so you could contact him, if it didn't succeed for you. And best luck! -
Wait - I tried starting the program, and it said "unable to start My Intel Wifi Technology. Advice?
Do ALL of these models come with Widi technology? I can't find it anywhere on my laptop. -
I recently bought the Inspiron 15R 7520 from Dell in the UK.
I would like to output sound only via the HDMI to my Samsung Surround Sound 5.1 system. What do I need to do to the laptop to enable the HDMI as an audio output? I am running Windows 7. -
So I've been using this for two months now and everything has been relatively fine. Now, however, the front left speaker has a weird sound to it - I don't know how to describe - kind of tinny almost like something is lose or squeaky. What can/should I do about that?
-
Anyone try the Windows 8 touchpad drivers with browsers like Pale Moon, SRWare Iron, and Waterfox? Two finger scrolling does not seem to work with the default drivers, and Elantech doesn't have fully functioning generic ones.
I found drivers online that get scrolling to work, but the touchpad settings always crash for those.
Edit @silvergator: if you got the laptop 2 months ago I'd try using your 1 year warranty on those speakers with Dell. Their customer support is generally good enough to send you replacements within 2 business days (unfortunately I had to use it a lot, but fortunately it was great service). Or if you're feeling DIY, hack in there and try to get some better speakers. -
It's weird because I only hear it sometimes. I don't think the speaker is blown because I don't listen to music loud. My only concern is having them come in and open up this whole thing to change that. Seems hard to get to.
-
TL;DR: Ensure it's not a sound file/driver problem. If the first two check out, you're either gonna have to call Dell (and they need to open the laptop) or deal with it.
Hm, well the only real problems could be (1) the sound file, (2) the drivers, or (3) the speakers.
If you're sure there's nothing wrong with the sound file, try reinstalling drivers (and if you want to go to the extreme, reinstall Windows). Another option is to uninstall the current drivers and let Windows use its default ones which work with the 7520 (confirmed by me).
If the speakers are an issue, and you want to fix them, there's no real way to do that without opening the system. Yes, they're hard to get to, and the Dell guys tend to run through the replacement quickly (I guess they have a quota), which means that some of the weak plastic holding the laptop together will be broken off unless you get lucky. I ended up with a laptop with a keyboard that wouldn't hold in place once.
On top of that, you're not allowed to do the replacement yourself. But the good thing is that if a Dell repairman breaks a part of the laptop, you can just call for more parts, which is just a vicious cycle that shouldn't exist in the first place and wastes time and money on both sides.
If you have any more concerns feel free to ask, but I'm not a very active user so someone else may have to help you. -
Hi,
For anyone that maybe interested I have been playing around with overclocking the 7730m tonight and so far I can push the core to 700mhz when leaving memory at 900. The memory didn't go far with a maximum of 940mhz. I settled with 680 on the core and 920 on memory. Temps seem fairly unaffected. Hitting a score of 1900 on 3DMark11 which is GT640M speeds. . Strange that 3DMark11 sees it as a 7750M -
My older Dell never auto selected HDMI output and I had to switch it as the default audio out every time I wanted to use it.
I'm not sure if you also intended on using external video or not. As you probably know HDMI outputs both video and audio. Upon plugging in the cable your laptop screen may blank. If you only want sound out you can have the laptop screen come back my using the display selection function, using the Fn+F1 key (or just the F1 key if you selected the function keys to work as system keys in the bios).
Also, make sure you use a new HDMI cable capable of working with the HDMI version 1.4 standard. Also, if the components you are using have older HDMI versions, it may not work correctly. Or it just may not work. HDMI is fairly new and I've seen more than one "cheap" brand of TV not work well with a variety of devices. -

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone would be able to answer this question...
I have one of these but with the 720p screen, could I replace the screen with a fhd 1080p screen?
Thanks a lot

Search the community section on DELL site and they may have some solution. I do not have my laptop for a few weeks so cannot give more specific advice. -
Hey guys i've been looking at this laptop. they're on sell at the moment at £599 with i7 and 1080p. Do you think its worth getting? or are there better on deals on somewhere? Thank you in advance :hi2:
