The new Ivy Bridge CPU's finally come to Dell, in the Inspiron series is the 15R special edition one of the first ones to get Ivy bridge. This topic is for owners, if there are any already and people who are interested in this notebook. This notebook is already for sale in some countries across the world but not yet in the US.

Bought this yesterday after speaking with some dell reps and wanting a proper HD screen in a 15", looks amazing and I can't wait to get my hands on it. :D

Currently my order status says 'work in progress' and I should get it within 2 weeks from now.

i like them i just want to knw y dell removed the numeric keypad .... i mean hp did this an ppl complained and then they brought it back .... y remove stuff you had before ........... and dell really need to move their speakers back to the top but it's still an option in my book .................
speaker placement i can live with no keypad kind of a deal breaker

it most likely is that's why im guessing they took out the number pad so inspiron and xps and vostro 15" will share the same key bed one without back lite the other with

if you check the keyboard on the 17r special edition it looks like the same keyboard as on the current vostro 17 to cut cost share the same keybed across as much systems as they can.

i like the design but since a number pad is a deal breaker ill have to go with the 17r special edition ............ still waiting to see what the new XPS will look like and offer before deciding

Going out on a limb here but I don't think 95% of dells intended market with this give a fu about a numpad. That's what the 17" has been for all along?

add the UK to that list:smile:

    me too :D

    same spec as above,,,,

i was kinda thinking the L521X but when specs for the R SE were posted i thought i had to go for this, got some employee scheme discount (non dell) and buy now pay at some point, sorted

if this turns out good given the falling price of SSDs, I will get a 256GB SSD for this, which will do me, as already have a desktop, for storage etc,

the only other thing is this WIDI thingy what do i need to get it to work?

and the instant turn on using an optional mSATA Flash memory drive (32GB) is this worth the purchase?

Talked to Dell and the 32GB mSATA option isn't available in the UK models at the moment. They don't know when they will be available yet.

is the interchangeable lid made of aluminum?
the only thing that buggers me in the design is the the lid, I fear it could loosen with a couple of years of use...
Anyway, for me now it's either this or the forthcoming xps 15, but I like the direction Dell has taken with the new Inspiron line.

Yeah, so far, no detailed info from Dell regarding those aspects.

I hope Dell retains the FHD 1920x1080 RGBLED screen on the current XPS 15 L502X. Granted, the screen on the XPS 15 is glossy, but its matte sibling (which is used on ThinkPad T520/W520) is equally awesome, with 95% gamut.

When you have the system in basket, UK description shows:
    Keyboard Internal UK/Irish Qwerty Keyboard

    but Singapore description shows:
Keyboard Dell™ Backlight Chiclet Keyboard with Multi-touch Touchpad (English)

Maybe is just the description different.

the 7730m isn't very good but not bad either, it scores 9600 on 3Dmark 06 that is somewhere between the 7690m and the 6850m. It is way worse than the gt 640m wich is a bit of a let down.
I was considering the 15R SE but not anymore, I will wait for the new XPS 15 or buy a HP dv6 with gt 650

I'm not that familiar with those benchmarks.
What does that score mean? Good for a little bit of photoshop? HD streaming? A bit of minecraft/diablo3/assassins creed revelations?

Because if thats the case it'll be good enough for me.

We are claiming between 5 hr 24 min and 6 hr 6 mins with a huge disclaimer (see Dell.com in your region for the legally approved and exact claims) based on usage and configuration. One of those YMMV deals. Real world browsing, emailing, some video should get around 4 and change.
I'm chasing on color gamut. That's not something we provide in the marketing materials and reviewers' guides, so I have to get the data from engineering if they're willing to share. My bet is it will be closer to the "good enough" category than the "top of class" category, TBH.
Backlit was qualified by engineering, but it's up to the regions whether to have it standard, offered as an upgrade or not at all. It will be standard in the US. You will have to check the website in your region to know for sure. Since availability and pricing is up to the regions, the descriptions in your cart and packing slip will vary.

    hey Bill,

I was thinking of going for xps. But after reading about the new inspirons, i felt they were promising too. I checked the dell india site, but half 'noteworthy' specifications of the special edition 15r and 17r are missing.

    for 15r
there is no Full HD screen and 750GB (7200 RPM) HDD. also only two processors are available. one is i5 other is i7 3612 where are the others?

    for 17r
    no i7 yet :(
are these things going to be released later??

I have ordered the 15 R SE inspiron from DELL uk. Sent an email as I was concerned about the backlit keyboard and I received a prompt reply saying "no it does come with a backlit keyboard" and "we will hold your order until you reply to us again and we deal with this". A few hours later they have already sent the thing.

Not impressed with the service tbh. Phoned and basically got messed around by sales teams not willing to comment on the backlit keyboard and why it states clearly on the dell uk website that it is a standard feature. :(

    Question to Dell-Bill Plz.

Do you know if the FHD LCD screen comes as an option for the Regular 15R or is it just restricted to the special Edition.....Also if in the future I buy the FHD LCD from ebay, could i install it in the Regular 15R or will it not physically fit? Thanks

Exactly what I went thru on Thursday ! With dell uk. Very very poor still awaiting a response but my attitude is its misrepresentation of goods to advertise something that is standard BUT they are not including it grrrrr
I have had no update to my order either apart from the initial order receipt

If it was not done on finance I would have cancelled already but at work on Monday so will see what a call to them does !!

hey combss......i m facing same problems on dell india website.......anyway i went to dell exclusive store in gurgaon and ordered V540451IN8 model of Inspiron 15R Special Edition 7520.....i asked their sales manager abt these upgrades...so thr is only 1366x768 screen and 1 tb 5400 hd.....but i couldnt compromise on i7 processor so i went ahead with 15r not 17r....other advantage is that u get ur laptop in only 7 working days if u order from dell retail store

Well, finally decided on a refund. Dell were supposed to call me today and they didn't :S Received this email today:

    "Hi Alex,

This order is out for delivery today. Once you have received it, please check if it is not backlit keyboard. If so, I will be arranging collection and full refund on this one."

    The previous email:

"It is my pleasure to assist you with this request.

As per checking, the keyboard for this order is not backlit. Please let me know if you still wish to proceed with this order so I can keep an eye on the delivery.

Moving forward, I will be working with you until you get this order. I will be your personal contact on this issue.

Rest assured, i will be on top of this case until issue is resolved.
    "

So apparently Dell have no idea what their products actually consist of :S One moment they absolutely do not have backlit keyboards and the next I have to pay for an item, wait for delivery, check myself and make a decision on returning. Seems like an expensive and long winded way to do business.

    No more dell for me!

How much did your inspirion 15r' cost if you guys dont mind. Im in canada so its not released here yet nor any info on pricing so just curios because this laptop looks really good. On the Singapore website it says $1499 I believe for the 15r special ed seems kinda expensive, hopefully its less in NA.

Hi all, bought this last week in Singapore at a roadshow for a cut price deal. Was deciding between this and hp dv6 but ultimately this seems a better deal since I will only use this for surfing web and multimedia entertainment.

My only gripe with this system is the non-backlit keyboard and the 3612 processor though I reckon there is not much difference between this and 3610 as I feel this is speedy enough for my needs :) .

    Cheers.

Offerings differ by region, so you will need to check the website for your country. We have qualified a FHD panel for the 15 on the platform, and the US is going to offer it.
I'm not 100% sure we advertised it as being standard in the UK, but if we did, please provide me with a screenshot or link. I will more than gladly take that information and add it to the internal discussion.

    EDIT:
Now I have to re-read the thread to make sure I'm not the one who said it was standard in the UK.

    EDIT2:
Found it on the UK page. http://www.dell.com/uk/p/inspiron-15r-se-7520/pd I added the info to the discussion. I'll post a follow up.

    Dell Bill

it was posted as above a few posts back, my whole arguement, is that not anywhere does it say its optional or not included, so I had assumed it came as standard, and the very fact its now been added as an optionaL extra has me livid, as my order has now gone into pre production i have no chance of getting this added, i also took out finance on it, so dont know where i would stand cancelling and re ordering, i had two arguements with DELL cusomter service reps online, they where just so irratating and not willing to understand my predicament

I'm working on something for you. Will post back or PM you when I hear back.

Not 100% sure about CA pricing, but basically, the bottom config for the 15R S/E will start at $899 US. You can probably extrapolate from there based on historical differences and your exact desired config.

i was also misled with the backlit keyboard as standard. mine didnt come with it so i phoned dell. will recieve a call as he confirmed on the uk site it says it comes as standard. will send an engineer round to fit one for me. will update as i go along. very happy with the laptop though cannot really judge gaming performance as theres no 650m driver atm

Hi all!!!. I´m newbie in this GREAT forum.

I´m a spanish boy, so first of all, sorry for my english.

I´ll decide to buy in dell.es (spain) two laptops. I like the new model.

    I have any question...

    I want 15" or 17" but with FHD and 8GB DDR3.

    - Is the same quality FHD screen in 15" and 17"...in the web page says for the 17 "400 nits" and nothing for the 15"????

    - Wich is better in terms of battery (15" vs 17" because of graphics card -7730 vs 650m I suposse nvidia optimus).

    - Is worth for 100€ more an i7 3612Qm Vs i5 3210

    - What about blu-ray for 49€ more....

    - What about mSata, working well?. Can i install the s.o. on it?

    - Can I install a second storage unit? --> SSD

    - What about heat , is the sound better than xps with jbls ?

Thank you very much!!!. I´ll planing buy two 15s or two 17s...any advice is very aprreciated.

    Regards.
