Thread for owners of the Dell Inspiron 15R - N5110 .

    My Setup :

    - Intel Core i7 -2630QM Quad-Core , 6MB L3 Cache
    - Samsung 4GB DDR3 1333MHz
    - NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M 1GB DDR3
    - Seagate Monemutes 500GB 5400RPM
    - High Definition (720p) WLED Display
    - 6-Cell Lithium-Ion battery
    - Dell Wireless 1702 802.11b/g/n
    - SRS Premium Sound

    ================================================

    Review :

I love the look of it very much and I love the Mac-look keyboard , The screen is 720p and I have no problems with it .

My setup is similar to the XPS 15 setup and I'm really impressed with the performance of this notebook .

It's my main computer , so I spend 24hr on it and it never crashed or anything , I have an external mouse ( Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 1000 ) so I can't say about the touchpad but seems nice .

The keyboard is so smooth and never mistyped with it ( Unlike the garbage I have on my Celeron rig :D ) .

About the gaming performance , As I said this is my main computer so I only game on it , I finished Crysis 2 , Black OPS , DiRT 3 with very good graphics settings and I plan to buy BF3 and MW3 soon , I wanted 1080p screen but gaming would be awful !

If you have any questions just ask.

I will update this thread with gaming benchmarks and everything.

    :)

    Watts = volts x amps.

If you have the Intel GPU N5110, you'll have the 65 watt AC adapter. If you have the discreet graphics N5110, you'll have the 90 watt AC adapter.

The N5110 has an average WLED panel. GT525M + i5/i7 should play games on medium, @ native resolution. It's not exactly a powerful card (mid range). But by the time you soup up an N5110, you can almost get an XPS 15...which offers a B+RGLED 1080p screen.

The N5110 isn't really designed for quad core i7's and DGPU. It has a really poor cooling system, mimics the one from the N5010. If you want a gaming laptop, buy an actual gaming laptop (far superior cooling).

    Hi,
Since you have the 130w psu, you might want to be more ambitious and upgrade that cpu to an i7 (normally use the 130w psu).
Roughly a third of the price more then the cost of a i3 2310

Even the i5 2410 or above cpu can be found for on ebay for around the price of an i3 2310 (normally use the 90w psu).

Do not buy one, a full disassembly including removal of motherboard is required to change your hard drive, unbelievably poor design!
This will be the last purchase I make from dell.

This is your most poorly designed notebook ever, it will likely be the end of 12 years buying Dell.

Am looking forward to receiving my Inspiron 15R N5110 ordered from Dell Outlet last Friday - the waiting is killing me :)

It has the i7 2670qm and a 750GB 5400rpm HD, but I will be swapping that for an SSD or a 750GB Seagate Momentus (I have both but not sure which to go with yet). Will probably replace the optical drive with a HD caddy too. I know the HD is hard to get at but I am reasonably confident I can cope as I have dismantled several laptops in the past and there are several good video tutorials around.

I don't really play games but might be tempted to get a good F1 racing sim. The main reason for getting the 15R was to replace a 4 year old HP Touchsmart which can't cope with the latest Adobe photo and video editing applications (CS6 and Lightroom 4). The CPU is rated as just under 7x faster according to CPUMark, and the graphics 16x faster although Premiere Pro should be even faster as it can benefit from CUDA core hardware acceleration in the nVidia GPU.

I'd be interested to know how people get on with light use battery life (using battery mode in power settings). Also, has anyone managed to fit 16GB DRAM?

    Ian

Congratulations! Well I can get 3hr with nearly max brightness. I think the battery is doing very well.
Maybe when you're replacing the HDD , consider repasting CPU and GPU, this would help alot with temps.

I think you can put 2x8GB DIMMs and it should work.

    Good luck :)

The LED backlight probably won't be a major factor in battery life. Limiting CPU speed and avoiding the discrete GPU would, though...

I may well do the thermal paste thing. I have some (Arctic Silver?) I bought for my desktop mobo that is a few years ago but guess I should buy some more - any recommended brands?
