Okay guys, here's my current setup:
    Dell Inspiron 1564 - Just upgraded to 8GB RAM - Windows 7 64-bit - Intel PCH HM55 Chipset - Intel i3 @ 2.13GHZ - 3MB Cache - Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator HD (Core i3) @ 3.68GB + Realtek Sound Card - 500GB d Drive, c drive being a measly ~50GB

Like I said, just upgraded the RAM and I'm feeling good :D So tell me people, what else can I upgrade? And I mean anything, even the hard drive! Any help would be awesome :3 Also, I'd like to stress that my main issue is that my c-drive is always in the red, despite moving iTunes over to the d-drive, so any help with expanding that?

    Thanks xoxo

I mean theoretically you can upgrade the motherboard to discreet graphics, the CPU to a quad core if you get the discreet graphics motherboard, RAM, HDD, screen, all depends on how much money you want to spend vs what you are getting.

Hmm, sounds good! Let's pretend price is no object, what can I do in that case? ^.o

Oh wow it seems I'm not the only 1564 user on this planet  .
You can find what information I gathered about motherboard upgrades here. Besides that I'm also looking for more upgrades down the road so I'll be interested to see where this thread goes.

EDIT: as far as the CPU goes, the 1564 was sold with i5's in them so it should work. I think this eBay link looks better then what you had in mind though (cheaper).

PS: Just reached >8000hours total runtime on my 1564 .

Thanks Aeny, I'll check that out and try to keep this thread alive! And WOW, 8,000 hours! JHEEZE xD I've clocked in about a year and a half on mine, I bought it from PC World though, not Dell, hence why I couldn't choose the upgrades then :S What do you think of yours Aeny? ^.o Seems you have roughly the same spec as me, roughly xoxo

An edit to my previous post, I recently found out that this is the i5 processor the 1564 was given as an optional extra by Dell at the time, the i5-430M:
    INTEL CORE i5 430M 2.26GHz 3M SLBPN
What does anyone think, possible upgrade? Maybe if I buy the chip and give it to my local PC shop to fix for me?

PS, Aeny, I just found out my board code is 08CNC9: Intel HD IGP Shared RAM DDR3 with latest BIOS (A13) as per your threads x Also, just found a 0F1R94 http://tinyurl.com/c6om9h6

Thanks for helping in the motherboard hunt, unfortunately the eBay seller was unresponsive when emailed and does not specify which of the 3 types the motherboard is.

Our laptops had equal specifications out of the box, the differences you see are aftermarket upgrades. I didn't buy mine from Dell either. It seems we even bought it around the same period.

And what do I think about mine? I absolutely love it (call me crazy :p). That's the reason why I've been looking to upgrade it instead of replacing it altogether. It doesn't have the most speedy CPU (for now) and the Intel IGP sucks for gaming. I'd really love to be able to play Mafia II on this thing, Currently getting ~5FPS. For browsing and all this thing is fast enough in power saver mode (0.9GHz on 2 cores, 2HT ones parked). It feels faster than my C2Q desktop due to the SSD and 8GB ram. This thing can take some abuse. It's been dropped several times, had it power cord and casing chewed up, ripped screen apart by me (adding 3th antenna). It looks like junk now but it gets the job done (Did I mention that I love it? :p).

Anyways, for your main problem I'd try to resize your D drive and add that freed up space to your C drive, if that is even possible.

So what do you think of your 1564?

What I would upgrade on mine
    • 1080p screen + correct cable (possibly from the studio line?).
    • Motherboard for the dGPU HD5450 overclocked to HD5470 clocks if possible.
    • 9-Cell battery (my 6-cell lost about 50% of it's life).
    • i7-940XM (heat problem? + bios problem? + power consumption problem?).
    • 500GB HDD in the ODD bay(currently getting the caddy). You could go for 1TB here instead.
    • 2x8GB of ram.

    Expensive, expensive, expensive...

2x8GB RAM won't work I'm afraid =/ go on crucial.com, they tell you how much RAM your system can take MAX before it just become pointless lol :p
And if you think your battery's bad, mine charges to 15% capacity, a recent Dell diagnostics test told me :p
And you see now, at the expense of a 1080p screen, motherboard and i7, I'm sorry to have to admit that you may aswell get a new laptop =/ although I see what you're saying, that you could spread the costs this way... but then you get back to the heat+bios+power problems of such an upgrade, I honestly don't think the 1564 was built to take more than i5, that being the max they sold it on =/ it'd just be a hulk hogan of a device, so fully pumped with steroids that it becomes simply unstable lol :p

It is a shame, I do like my 1564, it's my first ever laptop after all :p But I suppose I'm finding consolidation that it's time for a new desktop, and that one's going to be a beast! planning to get a sweet GT545 @ 3GB DEDICATED XD graphics card, 8GB RAM standard, upgrade to 16 after a while of getting bored, full HD 1080p screen @ 23inches (as big as my furniture can take), beats by dre on-board sound card, i7-2600 @ 3.4GHZ and so much more beautiful stuff :') that's the plan anyway lol xD

Although, having said that, I want to get another 4-5 years out of my 1564 to cover uni, so I suppose extending it's life will come at some sort of expense =/ What do you think, can our 1564 last that long?
