Hi,
I have recently bought a new Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop 250gb 3gb ram.
The problem
Everytime I close the lid on the machine the laptop reboots when I open the lid again.
My other laptops did not do this, when I closed the lid the machine paused and unpaused when i opened again.
Is this a setting I need to change? or a fault? etc.
thanks

Start> Control Panel > Mobile PC > Change What Closing The Lid Does. You should be able to figure out the rest.

thanks this was helpful but my setting say my laptop is configured to sleep when the lid is closed, which is what i would like, however my laptop still reboots instead.
my laptop seems perfectly healthy and i have no other problems.
is there any reason my laptop would not use these settings? -
So does it appear to go to sleep when you close the lid and reboot when you open the lid, or does it reboot right after closing the lid?
-
the screen turns off and i have one battery light when i close lid. when i open lid the machine reboots.
just realised machine only does this when battery is charging. however settings say machine should still sleep when battery is charging not reboot. -
This may be an operating system issue and not hardware. You should try reinstalling your OS and see if that will fix the problem. I had some problems like this before in a different machine, but when I reinstalled windows, everything cleared up.

I'm having the exact same problem with my new 1525, same specs as yours (3ram/250). However mine reboots without closing the lid, so basically any time I try to put it into sleep mode, hibernation or shut down will result in a reboot.
To save you some trouble (because I've been through lots with this) Dell basically knows of this issue but they say it's a Vista problem. There's something in Vista that doesn't always jive with some of their Inspirons (it's very random from my understanding) so until Vista comes out with a service pack to fix it Dell isn't going to help you. At least this is what they told us about 2-3 weeks ago.
As stated above you might want to try reinstalling Windows from disk (if you have it, otherwise you might have to call to get it). I've already had to do the "factory default" reset twice and it hasn't solved the problem.
If you do end up calling tech support over it, try to get a manager. I've called about this problem many times and have spent hours on the phone with them to get to "well we know about it but it's not our problem"... and it was my father who got to that point because I had hit a wall where they were just telling me to install some random update that had nothing to do with the 1525. But once he took over he finally started getting some answers. -
Hi,
Here's a thread at Dell.ca which provides a workaround Here.
You basically have to disable the power management of your WiFi card. -
I had the same problem. It also was shutting down very slowly and sometimes when switching users it would cause the screen to go blank. Sometimes it would crash when shutting down. All these problems were apparently caused by the ethernet controller driver and the problems were resolved by downloading the latest driver from the http://www.marvell.com website.

I found this solution on the dell site threads, and it has worked for me:
[This is a known problem with the 1525's and Dell is currently working on a solution. In the meantime, there is a workaround. In Device Manager, double click on your wireless network card (under Network Adapters), click the Power Management tab, and UNcheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".] -
I was able to resolve the problem by downloading the latest driver for the Marvell Wireless Ethernet Controller. Search for "Marvell Ethernet Controller" from the Dell Support site and you will find:
Marvell 88E80XX 10/100 Ethernet Controller, v.10.63.3.3, A00 11/30/2008 -
I meant to say that I downloaded the latet driver for the Dell Wireless Ethernet Controller. I believe the latest version is: Version: 4.170.77.3 (Driver); 4.170.77.13 (Application) , A20
