It seems the web site doesn't allow to choose a 7200 rpm HDD...

    Does anybody knows why ?

    Thanks

Dell's making their inspirons "cheaper" to promote their XPS line so you'll either have to look there, or buy one to replace yourself.

It's basically a forced upgrade system. If you want things like a dedicated card or faster drives then you will need to go with the XPS line.

Oh my bad, sorry about not paying attention.

Yeah, the Dell guy I ordered with on the phone noted that they are making the Inspirion series "Average" and incapable of gaming and making the XPS series more capable.

That is too bad because I really needed a 7200 rpm HDD and the XPS 1530 will cost me at least $300 more than the Inspiron 1525.

On the other hand, based on what I've read on this forums and reviews I think it is worthy to pay those extra 300, right?

I'm going to use the notebook to create different Virtual Machines (with Virtual PC 2007) for creating .NET, Oracle and J2EE development environments, usually with Windows 2003 Server O.S. (on the VM) for studying purposes.

So, I belive, a 7200 rpm HDD would be important, right?

PS: I don't play games and I'm not concerned with looks or design.

    Thank you for your information!

The HK Dell only have 320GB RPM HD for M1530...while I want a 200GB 7200 RPM HD for the speed and its cheaper.

    1520 has 200GB 7200 RPM HD as a choice though :(

I think you will be better off with the M1530 if you are going to do all that testing. The 7200 will help too.

    Yes, that is my conclusion.

Maybe I will sacrifice some RAM from 4 to 2 GB and, maybe some other options too, just for getting a better machine without making the price so high.

Later I will try to upgrade the RAM since XPS will give me more options for upgrading that Inspiron.

    Thanks for your advice!

you can always just get the drive from newegg or something and use the dell restore disc(or make one from their parition or however they handle it) or do the full reinstall. i don't know how the pricing, but then you're sure to get the EXACT drive you'd like

    bravo,

That is a great idea! I just checked and I found this option:

Fujitsu 120GB 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive - OEM
    120GB
    7200 RPM 8MB Cache
    SATA 3.0Gb/s
    $92.99

Are they easy to replace? (I never opened a notebook)

What about external HDDs like this:

Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus 500GB 3.5" External Hard Drive - Retail
    USB 2.0 / IEEE 1394a
    7200 RPM
    $134.99

Can I use an external Hard Drive with a Dell Inspiron 1525?

Because I know that external hard drives are the best option for Virtualization and, besides, I will not increase the heat inside the notebook like I would with a 7200 rpm Hard Drive!

Does anybody ever used an external HDD with a Dell Inspiron 1525?

    Thanks!

With Virtual Machines, I'd be more concerned about RAM.

Yes, RAM is probably more important than HDD speed for Virtual Machines but I feel is going to be easier for me to upgrade RAM later than replacing the Hard Drive.

I like the idea of a having an external 7200 rpm HDD and an internal 5400 rpm HDD. I've been searching and I figured there are two kinds of external drives ports: USB and FireWire.

"Firewire does have some advantages over USB 2.0, but both are excellent" is what says this article:
    http://www.hanselman.com/blog/PermaLink,guid,097ce75a-838a-4511-a858-d6de8e8e78a9.aspx

Does Inspiron 1525 have a FireWire port? I tried to find that configuration while building my notebook at dell's web site but there are no options for FireWire port. Does all of them come with it?

    What about XPS 1530?

    Thanks

The 1525 does have a firewire port and the internal hard drives are very easy to change. 2 exterior screws and 2 screws that keep the hard drive attached to a tray that slides in and out of the laptop.
The firewire controller on the 1525 is a good one as well. :)
