    Hi,

I have tried to use the microphone on my Dell Inspiron 1525 for the first time today and it has not worked. I've tried both an external microphone and the in-built one on the webcam.

I've spoken to Dell who has installed a new driver but this still didn't work. All they can recommend is re-installing the whole operating system meaning I will have to back all my data up and re-install everything.

This seems like a big job just to get a microphone working. Does anyone have experience of this problem and fixing it? If so any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Alex

Thanks, initially just for Skype - nothing too advanced so just need to get it working really.

Okay, have you made sure that Skype is set to use the correct input device, I find it is best to manually set it as sometimes it doesn't pick up the default device properly.

Think this is what you wanted - let me know if it wasn't or if you need anything else.

    Thanks

I did that this morning when I was on the phone to Dell. Have they not been installed correctly?

There aren't the right devices in the control panel, try those drivers I gave you a link to, they are the latest according to the download site and should make it work properly

It's worked. Don't know what happened differently when the Dell person tried to install the drivers but it has. Good thing I didn't re-install my operating system to get it working!

tumnasgt - many thanks for your help. It has been much appreciated!

I have Vista Home premium and a 1525 and the mic doesn't work at all. But it shows up as SigmaTel High Definition Audio on the sound properties dialog. And it says it is "working" but it definitely is not. I reinstalled the drivers from the link you provided but it still doesn't work.

There should be two inputs available, or maybe three, if you talk into the microphone, green bars should start to appear next to one of the inputs (in the control panel). You need to set that one as the default input device. If it doesn't work, give Dell a call, cos it could be a hardware fault.

    Hi,
I have similar problem of mic not working.
Since march 2010, I was able to use inbuilt mic & external head phone but since last few days both the options are not working while talking to friends via any messenger (yahoo / msn / gtalk / Voip).

I have downloaded the link provided by you and installed but still no effect.

I must also tell you that I tried to record my voice thru "sound recorder" & that was successful.

    Plz help.

    regards,
    SK

    Hi SK,

What version of Windows are you running?
Can you upload a screenshot of the Sound program in the Control Panel, so I can see what the drivers are recognizing.

I am having the EXACT same problems as SK. It used to work, but then it crapped out on me. I've downloaded and installed the audio drivers. My computer says that the microphone is working, but no audio is picked up in ANY of my programs. Attatched are the settings etc.

I am having similar problems with my mic. I was also hoping to just use it to Skype and for other simple tasks. I haven't even tried to use my mic before this -- I had to put in a new hard drive about a year and a half ago and at that point switched from running Vista to running Windows 7. Any ideas of where to start?

If you are using 32-bit Windows 7, the audio drivers from Vista 32bit should work. Get them at: http://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R218148.exe

If you are using 64-bit Win7, you can try the drivers above, though you might just be out of luck unless you can find the Sigmatel 92XX drivers for Widows 7 (which might be difficult).
