Hi, my 320gb drive that shipped from Dell 2 years ago is dieing out. It will need to be replaced soon. I am curious if any Inspiron 1520 users have upgraded to one of these new 1TB capacity laptop drives. Previously 500gb was the max capacity but now 750gb and 1Tb versions are available. From what I understand the drives must be 2.5 inch to fit in an Inspiron 1520.

Has anyone done this yet ? Which model drive have you installed ? Did you have any issues 'fitting' the drive in ? How is it working out ?

Any replies are appreciated. Thanks in advance. -Jon

They are taller. For now there is a 640GB drive from WD that can fit though.

I believe WD also has a 9.5 mm 750gb hdd

Isn't 9.5 the standard 2.5" notebook drive height?

Oh, ok, wow, I didn't realize the WD had released a 9.5mm 750GB drive. Thats what I've been waiting for. Well 1TB, but it's a step in the right direction. Now I have to figure oout how to justify a purchase and scrap the small HDDs that I seem to be collecting...

i suppose the 640s and 750s at 9.5mm are 5400 rpm? I was not aware of the 750gb at 9.5-

Thanks for the replies. Yeah after doing some searching around I see that the 750gb version will fit, but not a 1tb yet. Well, 750 should do. Faster than 5400 would be nice, as I do a lot music recording / production, but I guess it will have to do...and just hook up a faster external hd when necessary.

Anybody got one of them yet ?

lol i remember when i got a desktop in 01 with a 40gb drive and thought that was alot ha. i guess it's all relative though. they make bigger storage, and then they make software that uses more....

ten years from now 1tb won't be that much.

You will be bummed when both the 750GB & 1TB are available in 7200rpm.

I know, and will never buy a 5400rpm drive again. It doesn't make any sense.

Will only be months away and will run much faster (noticeably) and hotter.

Just make sure you have a quality cooler.

Yeah I have a 7200 external I use for my piano libraries. It's plenty fast even though I just use usb (this Cavalry doesn't have firewire). If I had a big fast internal though, it would be great to not need the external.

My internal drive is really dieing though. I don't want to wait too long, or it's going to be a lot more work than I want to do, re-installing everything. I just want to be able to copy the whole thing. Can't do that if it's dead.
