I did a search, but could not find anything...

I currently have a dell inspiron 1520 with the 8400M GS and it is adaquate but not great.

    I was wondering 2 things:
    1. is this card integrated into the motherboard.
    2. is it possible to upgrade it to the 8600GT (or above)

I am experienced enough (5+ yrs building/repairing laptops/desktops) to take the laptop apart and do a drop in replacement but if it requires an soldering i am probably SOL...

    Thanks

You're in luck. The 1520's card is upgradeable, and there is a card available for the 1520 that is better than yours. So yes, you can change it out to the 8600GT.

I am not sure though that the 8600 gt is a worthwhile upgrade to the 8400gs though.

Why would it not be a worthwhile upgrade? if I had the choice I would get the 8600GT in a heartbeat. but since my system already has the 8600GT im not complaining xD.

I paid for the 8400m GS and got the 8600M GT ... I'm happy

I do plan on keeping the laptop another year and then getting something newer.

The 6400 was never offered with the 8400 AFAIK, so no.

    Hi!

I have Dell Inspiron 1520 with T7250 core2duo processor, i'am afraid to open my laptop bcoz still under warranty, i called the service center inquiring for the same problem (video card upgrade) they tell me they cannot upgrade the video card unless they will replace the motherboard, so i keep searching in the internet (forums) for the possiblity for the upgrade of the video card, some of them said yes it can be, some said cannot.

can you give me advise coz i really want to uprgade from x3100 to geforce

    Thanks

You will need a different motherboard to upgrade from x3100 to geforce. The x3100 is built into the motherboard, whereas the nvidia cards are not.

Integrated graphics can not be upgraded unless you swap the motherboard also.

The only card that can really be upgraded would be the 8400gs to the 8600gt
