    Hi Folks,
I have a 4 month old Dell Inspiron 1501 where the display only works when the screen is partially opened. If the top of the Notebook is fully opened to a normal viewing angle the screen goes black or if the whole machine is picked up and tilted back it goes black. However if opened at only 45 degrees it will work although thats not much use !
The model is 1501 with AMD TL50 Dual core 1GB Ram 80Gig HD with 15.4" screen. The machine has not been dropped or damaged in any way.
Sadly I opted for the 90 day warranty so I will not get any help from Dell.
Has anyone got any ideas what the problem is?
    thanks
    Ricky

Seems to me like a problem with the standby hardware switch (that detects if the lid is closed or not). Since you have nothing to loose you could try taking apart the display assembly and see if there is something wrong with the switch. Refer to this : Service Manual - Display Assembly. Be very careful not to damage anything in the process.

EDIT : It could also be some sort of a loose connection. Therefore if you decide to take it apart then make sure everything is properly connected.

You just have to reseat the LCD cable. These things sometimes get loose due to frequent opening and closing of the lid. Just remove the hinge cover and slightly push the lcd cable downwards. There's no need to remove the entire LCD assembly.

Thanks for the advice. I removed the hinge cover and gave the LCD cable a push downwards and could not resist pushing the screen wires, this at first seemed to work but when i touch the LCD cable where it goes into the screen or tap the screen bezel the whole display flickers. Looks like i will have to dissassemble the whole screen to see if anythings loose inside? Got any ideas?
    Thanks
