My sister's old Inspiron 1501 started having power problems and would not power up so I now have it up on my bench.

I noticed that the power connector jack was broken so I suspect part of the problem was that it was not getting good contacts. I have a new DC jack on order.

Since I now have this puppy open, The processor is an AMD Turion 64 TMDMK36HAX4CM Which tells me that this is a 2Ghz single core Turion. ( for some reason when I worked on her machine before I thought it was an X2 Turion) As part of rebuilding this machine, I want to upgrade the processor.

What is the fasted processor that this MB supports without a BIOS update and with a BIOS update that would be recommended?

Thanks for your answers in advanced!

Well, I am going to go out on a limb and get the fasted X2 processor in the chip family. I havent found where the TL-64 works in the machine but plenty with the TL-56 so since they both are part of the 90nm Trinidad family, I am going to go for it.

I have also found some discrepencies in the max memory that I can put on this puppy. Dell says 2 but I have seen where 4 Gigs work. I saw one claim that 8 gig will work fine, but 8 Gig in a lappy is a waste (especially on this class of a machine).

It is a decent machine but cheezy feeling. I like my Latitude D810s better and my kitted out HP Elitebook 8530w for sure. <- now that is a nice feeling machine.

Well, I can put my soldering iron away.

I just wanted to post an update to the forum for anyone who may have the same questions that I had.

I was able to repair the machine and I purchased an AMD Turion X2 TL-64.
I replaced the processor and the bios immediately picked it up and is running fine.

For Google Searches: You can upgrade a Dell Inspiron 1501 Turion MK-36 to a Turion TL-64.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Now on to the memory! :)
