    Alright here's the deal.

I bought this laptop about 2-3 years ago, so nothing is under warranty. A few months ago the end of my A/C adapter cord broke off. I put it back together, and it would work when plugged in, but I noticed my battery would not charge. If I would unplug the laptop it would immediately shut off. Not sure if my battery coincidentally died at the same time I broke the cord, or if that had anything to do with it. I was told to buy a new battery. Still didn't work. I just bought a new A/C adapter. Still doesn't work. I'm positive both the battery and A/C adapter are compatible with my 1501.

    Here's the message I get.

"Warning: The Battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery."

I then press any key to continue, but like it says, it does not charge.

I have been reading forums on this issue for quite some time now, and have seen people mentioning updating the BIOS. I ended up trying that, but still nothing. Well, atleast I think I did. I just downloaded this and installed/restarted:

FIX URL [won't allow me to link]

    h ttp://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R142027&SystemID=INS_PNT_1501&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=13120&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=7&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=1&fileid=189540

Anyone have an idea what my problem is here?

BIOS update fixed the problem for me!
I had ""Warning: The Battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery."" with Studio 1535 and BIOS Version A2

Well... if anyone could confirm that the url i linked is the most recent one, that'd be great.

Or perhaps I may need to roll back to a previous BIOS?

Ignore my stupidity, I'm clueless on this topic

Try reseatting the battery if that doesn't work it is a Motherboard replacement, Did you drop the laptop at all with the ac adapter still in it or how exactly did you break off the ac adapter plug.

I had very interesting case with my Studio 1535!
We replaced the motherboard.New motherboard was with BIOS A2 (original on the motherboard)!
    Everything fine.
I updated the BIOS to A5 (from Dell's WebSite).
For some problems I dedicated to rolled back to A2 Version (from Dell's web)...
What a surprise " Battery cannot be Identified" - immediately after A2 Version (from Dell's Web)
    Lets assume:
A2 (original on the motherboard) - OK
A2 from Dell's web - "Battery cannot be Identified"
    A3;A5;A6 - OK

IS this me or Dell has/have slightly different "the same" BIOS versions?!

That's odd I imagine that the A2 version you rolled back to from the DELL website was a updated version of it, if that is even possible, I do believe however that dell does sometimes revise the version without actually creating a new one.

I have the same problem ( for the last 4 months) and the l/top is 18 months old now.I also have frequent crashes blue screen, black screen and black screen with a 2cm square box with vertical coloured bars/threads and or white bars. I contacted dell ages ago or there tec guys and they remotely installed xpress1150. which has caused my system to crash maybe 4 times a day . rather than once a week prior to there help. I recently emailed the TEC Guys and am still awaitng a reply. I have an extended warranty untill july 2010 and just what this covers is beyond comprehension.
so far i have had to attempt to resolve the problems myself .. I hope dell go bust, they are a rubbish company and care nothing for the consumer other than what they can generate in revenues for shareholders and directors. (who all use ibm note books )

has this problem been resolved?? I tried what was recommended by unplugging adaptor, holding power button, closing replugging but nothing. I, too, have an inspiron 1501. a brand new battery and a new ac adaptor, had the motherboard resoldered-a lot money and what a pain...this battery will not charge and can not be identified?

I tried posting but I can't find it and the dell website has been useless to me , as well as their techs on the phone. can someone please help me? the bios that was downloaded does absoilutely nothing!!!

jonny, how are you doing my names wade and im a computer spec.
please excuse my typos and spelling errors.

there could be a couple of reasons that the battery broke.
but what probibly happend is the A/C Adapter cord was broken, so im guessing that ment "torn or ripped appart"
but i dont know if you baught a new one or not, but this is what happend
when you fixed it and you turned it on and stripped cord must of surcuited the battery. charging anything that has with battery life storage that big with a stripped wire is completely unhealthy to anything.
you just half to remeber one thing batterys dont last forever and they always need to be replaced.
if you still have a warenty on that particular computer call your dell support technical support office and they should be able to send you a new battery.
if you dont kno if you have a warenty
what i suggest is call your local dell assistant, and check, they should be able to tell you "the largest dell warenty is 4 years" so check up on that.
if you dont have a warently, these chargers "A/C Adampters" are found at any technical store for 25-35$ and batterys are 55-80$ or on ebay for probibly cheaper.
i hope this helped, if you have any questions please dont hesitateto e mail me at...

i was reading the gentlemens above mine, and i exactly what is wrong.
you cant just take out batterys and put i n new ones, .
does any1 here play xbox? its like takeing the batterys out of your controller and putting in new ones. and every1 knows you half to locate it.
    heres what you do.
    (SHUT OFF YOUR PC)
flip over your computer and find were it says strike zone thats were the hardive of your dell computer is, what im going to have you do is just unscrew the screws "dont loose them!" slide out the hardive halfway and slide it back it people just call this a "wakeup call" its just something you need to do quick because it helps a little.
step 2 push it back in slowly and tightly and screw it in. flip it back over
plug it back in and boot it back up
im guessing you have vista because its popular for inspirons
when the first screen comes up at the bottom is will say "hit f8 for the boot menue hit it quickly to access it
then it will come up with about 5 or 6 options do the last one and do a quick test of your computer when your done exit it and restart your pc. after its booted up and your at your desktop click on the battery and change the power option to balanced, "this is recommended for all pcs" click is and refresh your computer again. and your computer should identify the battery.
