Just ordered the new model with i7 5500U, 8Gb, 4k screen, AMD R7. Will compare it to the old version when I get it. Especially the screen quality which is what I'm most curious about.

EDIT: the 4k model has 4 cell battery. And there's not big of a jump between the old i7 4510 vs i7 5500 really. I'm just bumped for the screen. -
How is the screen? Do you like it? How would you compare it to XPS 15?
-
Hmm, they updated XPS 13 and FHD model costs $1K. Difficult choice
-
I wish I could buy these expensive goodies like you guys :/
i5 4210 and 'regular' FHD for me D:
(I was going to exchange for the i7 and 8gb model at best buy today, but decided i'm not enough of a power user to justify it. I'll buy an SSD and this thing will fly for what I need it for. -
-
Phew, now I really don't know which notebook to choose
The specs of the new 7548 look fantastic. But its built quality is below average (look at my post at this thread). Also it's quite large for a 15" inch notebook. XPS 13" is going to be amazingly lightweight and compact. Also I expect better build quality from XPS. But 13" screen is a little small for my needs. At XPS 13 price point MBP 13 becomes an option. I cannot explain why, but on Mac 13" screen is as usable as 15" on Win. A refurb XPS 15" from ebay is an option. It has about the same price, but warranty/replacement is an issue.
-
Bad news: based on Dell website, the 4k screen on the 7548 will only have a contrast ratio of 400:1 which is not good at all for an IPS. Real life test has to wait till I get my hands on this model which is due to be deliverered on the 21st.

Hmm, strange. Anyway 400:1 contrast ratio isn't that bad. I'll wait for reviews ...
I'm still trying to decide what to choose: MBP13, Dell XPS 13 or 7000. Screen contrast isn't a big deal, because I mostly use notebook for text editing. What I really hate about 7000 - its below average build quality. I actually had a 7547 and returned it due to a huge gap between screen and the keyboard. You cannot close the notebook completely. Go to bestbuy and try yourself. All 7547's have this annoying problem. Also the bezel around the screen is rather large. They could fit a 17" screen into 7547/8 body. Keyboard and especially trackpad aren't very good too. Still if 4K screen is good I would consider Dell 7000 again. It's upgradable, has descent computing power and has 15". Build quality issue is annoying but not a deal breaker.Last edited: Jan 13, 2015 -

Anyway I'm sure 7548 is going to be a great computer. 1:400 contrast isn't bad at all and shouldn't be noticeable unless you are going to do some photo related work. Keyboard and trackpad are acceptable for a sub $1K notebook. With i7 and R7 you can even play "serious" games on moderate settings.
-
Also, unrelated to the touchpad, but the colors on this thing seems way off. I installed the same dark background and black Windows UI but the black seems more like a brown when compared to my Inspiron 15R, my Moto X phone and my desktop PC.
Another thing is that cleartype is blurry. Is this an intel HD 4400 issue?
I would love to find a fix for these issues otherwise it's going back and this might be my last Dell I buy after 15 years of being a loyal customer. -
Everything I've seen on my exchange is the same as the first one I had. This is an Elan trackpad with impossible to update drivers. They simply don't exist.
It's very frustrating. The trackpad is terrible. -
Honestly, that is something I cannot understand. Dell is one of the biggest manufacturers on PC market and they cannot replicate macbook trackpad.Last edited: Jan 14, 2015 -
I'm not sure what I should do. It's not the worst price ever at 579, but the trackpad is just really bad. I'm debating if I should return it or night and just buy the new Inspiron 11 model (3147). I have the 3137 model and would like the IPS screen.
I've been using my laptop more at home now as I have a new job as of last month, so a bigger screen would be nice.
Decisions, decisions... -
Just found this video Meet the Inspiron 15 7000 Series | Dell UK . The bezels don't look bad at all. Besides the CPU, I truly believe this gives the XPS line a run for the money. Almost as thin and light, 4k display (quality still to be tested) and okay battery life. The more I learn about this model, the more I want to actually keep it.

I can't speak to the quality of the 4k screen, but the 1080p on this is wonderful. My second one is a little warmer than the first, but I think it looks great. for ~$600, it's a bargain.
I don't mind the keyboard, but the trackpad... -
-
Going to try unsigned synaptics drivers, but everything I've seen indicates that this is an elan touchpad. I'll try lots of things and see if any of it makes a difference for those who have had issues. -
Welp tried three different sets of unsigned drivers to no avail.
Not sure what to do.
Hopefully other people can figure it out. -
Just checking the full HD models out in Best Buy and I'm in love with the new designs. Perfect screen, perfect keyboard, perfect build, perfect form factor, and one surprising thing was I loved the trackpad there. It worked as well as the one I have now so I really don't know why you guys got ur hands on on all of the bad trackpads.
-
I'm also having trackpad problems with the new Inspiron 7547. As others have said, Dell didn't ship it with a driver, and there are none on Dell's site that work. This is a big issue for me since the person who I bought it for has trouble with 2-finger scrolling and needs to change the settings. If Dell doesn't release a driver soon I'll have to take it back, which is a shame since this is the best laptop I've seen under $600.
-
I kept mine. I had through yesterday to return my exchange and I decided to keep it. The trackpad is definitely iffy, and I have moderate lightbleed in one corner, but I was too lazy to take it back, and who knows what the next one would be like anyway.
I think the value is still too good for me to not keep it. -
I haven't tried this but here is a suggestion for you guys: download the general trackpad driver from Synaptics' website, enter safemode and force Windows to accept it. I think it should work.

Dell released the drivers for the 7548 and the only thing they have under Mouse is the Dell Unifying App. So unless the unifying app has some hidden drivers (and I can't find any in the installer package) the 7548 may be in the same boat.
-
I was listening to The Vergecast from CES (I forget which one), and they were talking about the new XPS 13.
Tom Warren mentioned how it has the new Precision Touchpad (much like our 7547) and that it's real "low-level Windows stuff."
That's all I know. -
-
Plus Tom Warren is an MS guy. -
Can anyone tell me their monitor settings on the intel HD 4400 graphics properties? My colors just seem off no matter what settings I tinker with.
-
BTW, the new XPS 13 has different trackpads on different models.
-
I don't want to jinx it, but the trackpad on my exchanged model is much, much more responsive. No scrolling issues, no terrible cursor jumping around when trying to click something issues.
-
Guess what? My order has been delayed til the 26th. Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. Oh wait! Booooooooooooooo! I'm getting less and less excited about this now. Hmmmmmmmm. Wonder if that will affect my very "objective" review! Hah
-
I wouldn't get it for the price difference alone, but I'm curious to see what the quality will be like compared to an XPS 15 panel. I still think everything looks fantastic on the 1080p model, if not a twinge of lightbleed. I'd exchange this one, but it can definitely get way, way worse so I'm going to stick with it. Not bad for ~$600. -
-
Yeah I'm too poor for something better. Waiting for a deal on a 256gb ssd and I'm set for a while. Even with stock HDD the thing is pretty sweet.
Too bad they released it right before broadwell. I thought about returning and waiting, but I don't think we'd see broadwell i5s at this price for a while yet. -
400:1 contrast sounds really horrible. As far as I remember, XPS 15 9530 has a contrast ratio of 1600:1.
So, the 4K display probably indicates only more pixels instead of a premium display. -
I actually suspect that dell has a mistake on the website. QHD display with such low contrast doesn't make any sense,
-
The package has been delivered. Will post a quick review on the 4k screen soon. Stay put. Having class now so...heh

I got mine yesterday and it appears to be 60Hz. I'll have to put that to the test over the weekend to be sure it's not some weirdness with the way the AMD and Intel graphics cards switch off to one another but both the Intel display settings and Display Fusion report 48hz and 60hz refresh rate options (30 isn't even an option).
I'm guessing from what CRU is reporting it is a Samsung panel (SDC4C46).
The display looks nice but I haven't had much time with it yet (pesky work getting in the way) so I can't comment on the panel quality much yet. It's crisp, like you would expect a 4K panel to be of course. Need to look closer at the contrast though after Dell reporting it to be 400:1.

Here is a general idea of the screen size after scaling it to be readable (I think this is the default DPI setting it comes with as well): http://i.imgur.com/H7mVdCR.png -

I am thinking of buying the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 (7548) with the specs below;
Processor
Vijfde generatie Intel® Core i7-5500U processor (4 MB cache, tot 3,00 GHz)
Besturingssysteem
Windows 8.1 (64-bits) - Nederlands
16GB, DDR3L, 2 DIMM, 1600MHz
Harde schijf
1 TB 5.4K HDD [1 TB, 5.400 rpm SATA-harde schijf]
Videokaart
AMD Radeon R7 M270 4GB DDR3
Beeldscherm
15,6-inch touchbeeldscherm met led-achtergrondverlichting, Truelife en UHD-resolutie (3.840 x 2.160)
But I am not totally convinced of the AM Radeon R7 M240 4GB DDR3, I want to buy this laptop for gopro video editing with Magix Movie Edit pro 2015.
The specs looks amazing, as also the price. Can someone advice me if this laptop will do the trick
thanks! -
I am in love. The 4k screen looks fantastic. Very good contrast. Color pops out of the screen. I'm not sure if it's 100% color accuracy or not which I don't really care much but it is very high quality. And I love love love that it's optically bonded so there is no gap between the glass and the panel. Brightness seems on par with my 7537 or even better since it's bonded. Also the glass covers the whole screen instead of the plastic outside and glass inside like those models from best buy. The touchpad is a bit funky but I have to update the system first and I think i will have to adjust the sensitivity up a bit. 2 finger scrolling tap to click works fineI hate the HDD. So freaking slow. Build quality is awesome. That's it for now. I think I'm keeping it. Cheers. I can't do gaming testing since I don't play them really but other basic to medium tasks I can test out if u request.

AMD Radeon R7 isn't for "serious" gaming. This is a budget low end video card so I don't expect gaming in 4K mode possible. But with moderate settings (i.e, resolution reduced to 720p) all games should run with acceptable frames rate.
