I ordered Dell Inspiron 15 7000 with a 750m. Since it only has 1 harddrive. How would I go about partitioning the 1TB drive into 2 partitions? Would I have to format, partition drives, install windows then install linux?

Follow the link and look at the "after installing windows" section. The advice works for Windows 8.
How to Create a Separate Data Partition for Windows -
Thanks! Now just need my laptop to arrive! -
I didn't notice that you wanted to install Linux. You'll need to use your distro's tool for this (often gParted which runs during the installation process for, say, Ubuntu) instead of Windows. I thought you simply wanted data storage in a separate partition.
Also, see my post in the other owners thread in this forum. I posted a few thoughts on Linux installation which I will likely do, but haven't attempted quite yet on this computer. Be prepared for some work and limited hardware support (could be you might need an external mouse and do lots of work to support the nVidia chip and cross your fingers that it'll work). -
Worst case scenario I will install vmware.
