    Hey,
I'm confused whether to buy a Dell Inspiron 14z or a Dell XPS 14. Can anyone help me suggest the better one.

    Specification :

    Dell Inspiron 14z :
    1. 3rd Gen Intel® Core™ i7-3517U Processor (4MB cache, up to 3.0 GHz)
    2. 8 GB RAM
    3. AMD Radeon™ HD 7570M with 1GB GDDR5
    4. 14.0" HD WLED TrueLife (1366x768)
    5. Hard Drive 500 GB / 5400 rpm

    Dell XPS 14 :
    1. Intel 2nd Gen Core i7 2 i7-2640M / 2.8 GHz
    2. 8 GB RAM
    3. Hard Drive 750 GB HDD / 7200 rpm
    4. WLED backlight
    5. NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M 1 GB

I'm going to use it for college purpose and normal gaming. May play a few heavy games one but otherwise normal.

The Dell Inspiron 14z would have better gaming performance but may have difficulty running heavier games. I'd look for a system with at least an NVIDIA GT 650m in it if you don't want to have any problems with games. I know Dell's Alienware line has 14" models with that GPU but you can get it in some other brand laptops for under $1000, not to mention a more powerful processor.

But it's bulky in size and the it has second generation i7 so that's the reason I'm not opting for Dell Alienware M14x.

I have an Inspiron 14z and I am having a lot of problems with it. A friend of mine as well. It shuts down by itself, starts up extremely slow, and shuts down improperly always displaying error messages when you restart. I really dont use it for much so its pretty disappointing. Problems started after about 2 months. Called Dell 2x to fix but problems still happening after 2 hours on the phone. I am so annoyed becuase I dont have hours at a time to spend on the phone with them while they try to fix it. Now I am stuck with a useless computer that I paid 7 or 800 dollars for. I would not recommend this computer to anyone-- especially becuase I know someone else having the same issue.

As with anything with graphics, I think most probably it is the heat issue. Have a fren who had that kind of problem with 15R. After using a decent cooler pad the problems just melt away. You should try that. Hi spec processors with puny cooling system just does not work. Gaming is still the province of desktop CPUs with better airflow and decent fans to move them.
