hello everyone.. i've got my dell inspiron 1420 for about a week now, it was working fine for the first couple days, but now, every time i restart my computer, i get the error saying windows can not start properly and ask me to choose an option, "safe mode, safe mode with internet...etc". and no matter which one i choose, i get a quick flash of a blue screen and computer restart itself, and then the same thing again, i have to shut it down manually and turn it on again, then everythin works fine. there's no problem runing windows or any other applications. it only happends when restart, for example, the required reboot after upgrade, or just an normal restart from windows. please give me some clues on how to slove this problem. thx in advance.

When you do manage to start Windows (which version?) normally, go into Advanced system settings (sorry, don't remember exactly where, poke around), and under something like Startup and Recovery (?) tell it to not restart automatically on system failure. This will at least let you see the BSOD and read what it says (may not be of much use...).

After that, you can also try to enable logging when booting (I never got any useful info from such logs though).

see if you can do a system restore >> start >> all programs >>accessories >> system tools >> system restore >earlier time >> select a date/time close to when you bought it......

sometimes that fixes the bsod(blue screen of death) when you aren't sure when it occurred....

ok, it says "remove any newly install hard drive or hard drive controller...blah blah...run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption. technical infomation:
    STOP: 0x0000007B (0x80403BAQ, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000,0x00000000)"

i'm thinking it might has something to do with dell media direct. maybe i didn't install it right, when this problem first occoured, i thought i couldn't start windows at all, so i reinstalled windows and everything.

okay, when i run CHKDSK /F in command prompt it says.
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Connot lock current drive.

chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? <Y/N>

ok is that normal ? should let it check the next time system restart?

yes it is normal. When you chkdsk, usually it will schedule the checkup on your next restart because the OS locks out the files you are using in processes.

Typically, a blue screen while you bootup or shutdown is due to driver conflicts.

    no data loss

it simply sets your system back to an earlier date. It will remove updates and recently installed programs/drivers....... This is just what it is for. It's great when you don't want to search forever for a fix/repair, are tired, frustrated etc. You can even use it during boot up if you're having problems loading the OS >> just hit F8(most computers) several times during the first splash screen when you see the F2, F12 options(most pc's) :)

Anyone getting a BSOD after one of the latest MS updates?
It looks like KB943899 is the cause.

Symptoms: if you cold boot, there isn't a problem.
But, if you restart, after post and Vista just starts loading, a blue screen flashes and forces a reboot - with the windows crash screen (safe mode, etc).

There is another thread on this:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=202193

It sounds like the sata/ahci driver from MS is the issue.

    Here is a possible fix:

Download the Intel Matrix Storage manager
    http://support.dell.com/support/down...&fileid=205611

Unpack it and note the path and directory - (154200)

Open up device manager and find your ACHI controller.
Right click and update drivers. Browse my computer - and use the directory you just downloaded.
This will replace the problem driver with the newest Intel one.

    This should fix.

Thanks for the post!! This worked for me. Couldn't figure out why all of a sudden I was getting a BSOD after restart, but reinstalling the Intel Matrix Storage Manager fixed the problem.

Note - you can get the driver from Intel's site also. I should also point out that I didn't get the BSOD if I shutdown and turn the laptop back on. It would only happen when the computer would restart.

Hi, I'm having this same problem on my xps m1330 after a windows update. I can't even boot into windows at all... its stuck at the windows error recovery screen then goes into the bluescreen. I downloaded the Intel Matrix Storage manager onto a flash drive. What should I do now?
