Just want to see how many of you returned your laptops because of the headphone jack noise.

Didn't know there was a problem with the Headphones jack in the Inspiron models.

I'm still waiting my Inspiron 1520 which will be arriving in a month, I just hope that I won't have such problems.

I think the biggest issue people are returning their notebooks for are because of grainy screens. I am still on the fence on returning it because of the graininess and lighting issues.

ok, this is such a little problem, and it will most likely be fixed with a bios update or something from dell. NOT worth returning over because they are all made the same way so a new one would do it too. Try disabling the modem from your computer and see if that helps. It worked for me and for others too.

I returned my Inspiron 1420 because the display was crap. Apparently Dell is sourcing displays from several manufacturers and some are very bad and I got one of them on my laptop. So they are refunding my money as they cannot guarantee which display will be received by the buyer.

is the noise from the processor normal? like when the cpu is thinking it makes audible whiring sounds. i hardly hear it on my desktop, but is it like this on all notebooks?

This isn't really a little problem. The sound coming from mine is so loud you can hear it over the music, and it even drowns out some of the notes.

You know there is something wrong when this many people complain about it. I just tried disabling the modem, it did not help. I have a feeling that those that do not have this problem are truly lucky, had their ears blown out over playing their ipods too loudly, or have really high volume threshold headphones which are usually very expensive and require amps.

Also, the sound level varies. One of the laptops you can hear it over music and is very high pitched. In a replacement they sent, it was lower pitched and slightly lower volume, but it was still there. And this was a "new" (probably refurb) replacement laptop from Dell that was sent to me 2 days ago.

This problem is likely never to be fixed with a simple bios or update. They know its a problem with their motherboard and/or soundcard, which is why most people here have had offers to replace the motherboard. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that their fixes are good enough yet, or they are simply not fixing certain laptops.

I too believe it varies because some say it's REALLY annoying and some don't...

    I'll try to record mine somehow tomorrow ( I mean today, it's 1 am :) )
