    Hi,
    I have a 3 year old Dell Inspiron 6000.

The sounds has become 'choppy' and skips momentarily, every two or three seconds on all sound playback, video, .wav's, mp3's, etc. - even the WinXP startup tune.

I apparently have the latest drivers for my Sigmatel C-Major - 5.10.0.4255
I cannot use system restore as the problem is a few months old.
I have not made any recent changes which may have caused the issue.

Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how I might try to remedy this please?
    Thank you in advance.

We had a laptop at work doing exactly the same. We reinstalled the OS, since it was running really slow anyway, and the problem seemed to cure itself....

My parent's laptop has the same problem. I think it's caused because their hard drive is starting to fail (and indeed it is failing).
So you might just have to reinstall your OS, or buy a new hard drive/computer.

    Hmmm....
Neither jobs are something I like the idea of !

Reinstalling the O/S isn't simple since WinXP Home was pre-installed and I didn't receive a disc from Dell when I purchased the laptop.

Replacing the Hard Drive is a possibility but I'd much rather transfer everything over from the old drive first if possible, which I know isn't straight forward on a one-disc system.

    But thanks for the suggestions.

    edit:
ps: I've just replaced the keyboard with a new one and the battery is dying too - 'orange light of death' !!
( aren't Dell batteries really poor for purpose. My 6-cell only lasted 4 months before only charging to a maximum of 40 minutes usage time.)
