I'm not to up on the latest technology and I'll be ordering an I6000 soon to use for school. I am little confused as to which screen I should get. I'm not a gamer and I'll be using it for word processing, internet(wireless) and possibleysome photo editing.

Which screen would you guys recommend?

I recommend either the XGA or SXGA+ monitors. The UXGA monitor is hard to see on a 15.4 inch screen, some people like the UXGA option but I don't. It all depends on how much real estate you want.

Sounds to me like XGA will be just fine for you if you're not a power user and just want to be able to see stuff as well as possible.

That is the basic screen, right?

Basic is sort of an undefinable term, they're all basic offerings from Dell. Some are just higher resolution. The most common being XGA and SXGA.

Thanks... so since I'm not a power user, the WXGA would be fine for me? What if I'm a toy geek and I like to have the "best" of everything? Is there any benefit to the SXGA to a non gamer?

yes, WXGA is fine. It is just a widened version of an XGA, and gives you more viewing/working space. I definatley recommend it!

the 6000 comes in 3 flavors

    wxga 1280x768
    wsxga 1680x1050
    wuxga 1920x1200

if you're unsure what res you want, play with your desktop resolutions or to go to a best buy/fry's/etc. to see in person.

there's no way you can tell what you want from a forum discussion, you have to see it in person.

since it's a completely personal choice, any posts about what you should get are just poster's opinions of what they like. for example, since you don't call yourself a 'power user' the recommendation of wxga came up; however, i would say that since you are a student, the highest resolution is the best because you can get a full page on the screen without having to scroll up or down. you can't do this in wxga and when youre writing papers and taking notes all the time, scrolling up and down just to see what's on one page is extremely difficult and frustrating.

That's a good point about getting everything on one page... never thought of that. Is the text smaller? So wsxga would be good for this?

I plan on going to a Dell store next weekend to look at them.

my friend's wife has a wsxga 8500 (also a 15.4 widscreen) and if i remember correctly, you can get about 80% of a page on the screen.

yes, everything is smaller the higher the res u get.

since you're going to the dell store, then i think you'll be in great shape as many people don't have that luxury and have to buy their dells sight unseen.

    good luck.

yeah, that's what i thought you meant... they don't sell any at the dell stores anyway, u just order from them... but the big difference is that you get to see them in person which most people don't get to do

Well hopefully I'll get to see it at the Dell store and make that decision based on my impressions of it. I hate to buy stuff without seeing it.

I ordered an i6000 with the WUXGA screen (highest resolution) and returned it because I didn't like it. You're not supposed to run those screens at resolutions other than the native one, so you have to do other adjusting. Most things can be fixed, but some things I couldn't make bigger. In my opinion, WUXGA is only for people who really want it. I didn't know what I was getting when I bought it. Hope this helps.

I have a i6000 with the WSXGA screen. My girlfriend has an i6000 with the WXGA screen. While I don't the high resolution in all situations, the viewing angle is noticebly better on my WSXGA screen. This was the major reason I went with the WSXGA and it seems worth it to me. The WUXGA doesn't offer a better viewing angle according to Dell's website.

My screen looks so much better than my girlfriend's that I try to avoid setting mine next to her's so I don't make her feel bad.

No, I was looking around and people said that the Latitudes were higher quality so I got a D610. I realized that the I6000 was kinda big anyway and the D610 is easier to carry around, although I do miss the widescreen. It just has the regular XGA screen, which is ok, but the viewing angles are kinda weird.
