    Well all I can say is mine doesn't have this problem. Typically such noise can be heard if there is anything magnetic around it, perhaps something magnetic damaged the microphone/headphone jack?

    Its not a common problem, and the majority of people don't get it... have you tried using a different pair of headphones other than the one dell provides? If the same thing happens, you might want to consider getting a replacement if it is too annoying.

    Oddly i used to have this problem but after sending my 1520 to Dell for an unrelated repair I got it back and I haven't had the problem. FYI they changed my heatsink and fan. It is possible its a known issue and they are told to just kill two birds with one stone and fix the problem.
