Maybe they will use also somewhat less power without RTX cores, thus will be more efficient.

I can’t find reviews for the new G7 anywhere. Has anyone done a review yet? All I’ve found are hands-on videos from CES.
Also, there is currently no option to configure the G7 with 144hz screen or the 90Whr battery (in the US anyway). I’ll ask one of the sales reps on chat (for what it’s worth), and report back.dreamcat4 and Flying Endeavor like this. -

I have also been looking all over the place for reviews as well, but no luck.. Most of the big reviewers are focusing on the more higher end RTX equipped laptops, such as those with the RTX2080 and of course the controversies surrounding the RTX2080 Max Qs. I also hope DELL updates their website, because I would only be interested in the G7, particularly the 17 Inch if it could come with an RTX2060 and a 144HZ panel. I would also love to see more reviews of the other RTX2060 equipped laptops that DELL/Alienware has considering it is hard to get accurate performance ratings for each of them due to all the discrepansies with each of these RTX cards.
Please let us know what you find... I could also try to contact another DELL Rep if need be.IKAS V and Turns>Airs like this. -
Considering how underwhelming the 2000 series Max Q cards are I think the best RTX laptops to buy are the RTX 2060/RTX 2070 models.
More so the RTX 2060 because yo get a pretty significant boost over the GTX 1060 it replaces.

That's why I loved the GTX xx60 range all the way from my first ASUS G74SX with a 560m to the Dell G5 series. Almost without exception they were between $1200-1500 CAD and offered reasonable performance for a fair price. To me the RTX has pushed the xx60 range into unreasonable pricing territory and if the GTX 1660 does not offer a good boost over the 1060 and the pricing is not in the low to mid $1000 range, I'm waiting a while for my next upgrade.Flying Endeavor and IKAS V like this. -

In my case, gaming laptops are well... let's just you are VERY privileged to own a good high end gaming laptop (yet alone a gaming desktop as well, like my current set-up). In fact, the gaming laptop I am going for, the Alienware M15 as configured the way I wanted originally (GTX1070MQ, Epic Silver, 144HZ monitor, 16GB RAM) would cost upwards of 120,000 PHP, and I would also have to worry about warranties cause the local stores here have a knacking of not honoring warranties and the Bureau of Customs here would also love to get their hands on your shiny new laptop to slap a VERY hefty tax on it, even if you are simply having it shipped abroad for repairs under warranty. xD
This is hopefully going to be my first ever laptop and my most expensive investment to date. xD My relatives are questioning me heavily on why I am willing to spend so much of my hard earned money on something such as this, and technically, what I am going for is not even the highest end gaming laptop out there. So yeah, I really do not wish to make a mistake with this one, cause it would be a very expensive mistake. I do not want to make a move unless I know for sure what I am getting into and what exactly it is I am buying. Hopefully more reviews come out.. and yeah.. still waiting for more news on the GTX1660 series. I am hoping they either perform well at a decent price, or they offset the market even further causing more price drops. (A man can dream right xD ) -

This, exactly this. I have seen countless reviews of the GTX1070MAXQ equipped M15, and practically all of them stated the M15 would run to 100 degrees Celsius on the CPU side, that would not do at all... That is one of the main reasons why I am really interested in these new RTX Cards, because based on the articles I've read, the new RTX Series are much more power efficient thus generating less heat while still maitaining good performance, hopefully improving the thermal output of the M15. I would like the laptop to at least last me a good 2-3 years, hopefully more.. and if it's CPU constantly runs at 100 Degrees Celsius, it might not even last a year with me. However, if there is a significant sacrifice in the actual gaming performance of the RTX2060 M15 as compared to the GTX1070MQ equipped M15.. Then I might still go for the GTX1070MQ.. you could always undervolt it to get better thermals or have the laptop repasted.Last edited: Feb 4, 2019 -
Quick update: I chatted with a Dell sales rep on their website earlier today. Unfortunately, the sales rep didn't have any information about when the 90Whr battery or the 144Hz screen option would be available.
HID evolution is a re-seller, and they're showing the 90Whr / 144Hz options as "pre-order / availability in additional 1-3 weeks".
They may be better connected and able to provide more insight on expected time-frames.dreamcat4 and Flying Endeavor like this. -

Is the RTX2060 not maxQ? Maybe it will worth than the money from Outlet, but I do not see with I5 CPU option.

I talked to the German Dell guys on the phone today, unfortunately they are only offering 60Hz panels, no 144hz or gsync options planned currently. Probably crappy 60 Hz panels knowing Dell. Disappointing.

Indeed, and they now also have the G7 17 Inch with a 144HZ as well for roughly $2,088, but it has the RTX2070MQ. I hope DELL releases more options for the G7, particularly the 17 inch, such as being able to pair the RTX2060 with a 144HZ monitor, as well as customize the internals such as the RAM, HDD/SDD as well as the color.

Currently Dell USA is showing the G7 15 w/144Hz available with 2070MQ only. But they are offering the G5 15 with 2060 144Hz. Aside from GPU, when spec'd the same (16GB, 512, 90Whr, 144Hz) the G7 costs $2330 vs the G5 at $1800. Looking at other manufacturers, the 2070MQ seems to carry a $300 premium over the 2060. The G7 has Killer wireless 1550, but you can buy one of those cards for $30.
So it would seem Dell is assigning a $200 premium to the G7's form factor? The cooling systems look the same from the "exploded view". Anyone have some thoughts on that?
I really want to order a new laptop, but the wait for reviews is killing me. -

The pricing on the current G7 series seems a little too expensive imo and the current M15/M17 with a similar config comes pretty close as well. As such not seeing a lot of incentive to go with the G7 with an RTX (G 5 is better priced)

Another question:
In uk website, there are 2 G5 configs. One of them at 1349 says:
"15.6-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) Anti-glare LED Backlight Non-touch Narrow Border IPS Display"
Wherare there is the more expensive (+100 GBP) sku, which highlights a different display. Which then says:
"15.6 inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS 300-nits Display"
Now this is confusing in two ways. Firstly, it's saying the on the cheaper SKU the lcd is 'non touch'. But why specifically state that, if you then are not going to also say that there is a more expensive option with a touch screen. Which the 300 nits one does not claim to be.
Secondly, hidden in the * next to the splurb about display. WHERE It says:
" Visualize the victory
See what your game is capable of with powerhouse, NVIDIA GeForce® RTX 20-series graphics and up to 6GB GDDR5 dedicated memory. Fierce, flicker-free visuals come alive with optional 144Hz and G-sync displays.*Plus viewing all of the action on a FHD display with a narrow bezel lets you get deeper into the mission."
and then you click on the asterisk * in that sentence. A pop-up window then says:
" Important Details
On NVIDIA RTX 2060 GPUs and above.
Close"
Well both of these skus ^^ at 1349 and 1449 have the RTX 2060. Yet neither of them specifically state that they are 144hz. So is it that they are BOTH 144hz panels? Or only the most expensive sku has a 144hz panel?Last edited: Feb 7, 2019 -

Hi,
If you go to support page for new G5 and G7 series you can download Setup and Specification manual witch states all of relevant info for these notebooks:
1. They all have 2 RAM slots (very important because product page is little confusing on that part)
2. 15'' version have three options for display: 220nits 60Hz, 300nits 60 Hz, and 300nits 144Hz
3. 17" version has two options for display: 300nits 60Hz, and 300nits 144Hz
So if sku description for 15" says FHD IPS and no luminance number, than it is probably 220nits (the worst one), for 144Hz it should say 144Hz, otherwise is 60Hz, 17" panels should all be 300nits.
There is also info on GPUs:
1. For G5 15" versions there are listed options: 1050Ti, 2060, 2070,
2 For G7 15" there are: 1050Ti, 2060, 2070, 2080,
3. For G7 17" there are: 2060, 2070, 2080.
I think that G7 15" version won't be available in europe, but could be wrong.
Hope this helpsTurns>Airs and alberty like this. -

Oh okay, that's annoying, i don't like the silver hinge on the G5 15... I was hoping to get the G7 15.

It'll be interesting to see how these fair. Hopefully some reviews contain information on the new screens and larger batteries. If the screens are comparable to what's in the GS65 and Aero 15 or if they're still cheap, and if the laptop gets decent hours on battery. I'd assume the 60hz IPS screen is the same one used in previous models, although it would be nice if they put a better one in there this time around.
Oddly the Aussie G5 store shows only one laptop preconfigured with a 144hz display (the 2nd most expensive option) while the most expensive option has a 60hz display (no in store option to upgrade) but has the 90whr battery with a mention of the 60whr battery right below it.... This part of Dell's site has always felt like a mess.
I've wanted a laptop suitable for game dev work with a nice screen and a big battery but the only options so far have been thin flimsy ones with bad cooling. I'd hope a low/mid tier model could be ordered with the (hopefully) nicer screen and bigger battery. Still working for it but when the time comes I'll try asking a Dell staff member on their store. If anyone else is doing something similar, share how it goes for you.Flying Endeavor likes this. -
Stephen from Ownordisown did a first impressions/unboxing video of the G5 SE. He didn't seem too impressed with the system, specially after verifying that AW Command Center has only very basic controls enabled (not even RGB keyboard lighting).
At $1800 for an 8750H (that thermal throttles), RTX 2060, FHD 60 Hz screen and a non premium build quality it doesn't seem too much of a value proposition

Great spot on the vid Arondel. Quite disappointed with the results from OwnorDisown and it pretty much validates what I've been thinking already (and most other people it seems), namely that RTX is just not worth the premium price.
I've seriously considered Dell with the RTX 2060, but in the end I'm just going to wait for the GTX 1660 ti which according to recently leaked benchmarks can match the 1070 in performance. If the pricing is reasonable (and in Canada that is a big if) then I'm going to look at that option instead.
A real shame too. Dell has done so many things right with this generation in terms of build, design etc. that I really like. Nvidia has simply stuck them and all the other manufacturers with an expensive lemon.Last edited: Feb 18, 2019Arondel likes this. -
Just received a Dell 5590, it does feel a bit plasticky but not as bad as it sounds from OwnorDisown video in my opinion. It feels solid though and just a bit too heavy, the G7 15 might be the perfect balance.
Out of the box the keyboard feels a bit weird but i guess i will adjust with a bit of time on it.
I'm going to test out some benchmarks and games to see how the fans and heat are handled.
Ask away if you have specific things you're wondering about this model.Arondel and Flying Endeavor like this. -

After that it stayed around 80/85. At full speed the fans are very loud and annoying.
I can also confirm that you don't have fan control at all on this. Base Alienware Command Center only gives you battery tuning and useless stuff that Windows can do.
I downloaded separately the Alienware OC Control package, it installed correctly but did not enable anything except for a few seconds after reboot.
I could see the new tab that you have on Alienware systems but once the loading completes, the tab vanishes...
In the installation files there is a Dell G5 5590 folder though; maybe an update will bring it to life ?
I also quickly tried to open it, removed every screws and the panel would not come off, might need a prying tool, it's very tightely fitted. -
As I understand it the proper refresh of the G-series is later this year, which would explain why RBG per key, OLED screen, and fan control are not available yet despite being displayed at CES 2019 (bar the fan control). I mean the RTX 2080 isn't even on the G-series website yet.
-
BTW the dell rep who was talking there said the only difference between G5 and G7 was the chassis material (plastic vs metal). Which would suggest that the thermals on the G7 might be the same. But I am not certain if the dell rep was making such accurate statements as to be sure of that.
Also I am wondering why there are still no good review of the G7 yet. It has been a fair while now. And why it's so expensive and yet, with only a 60hz panel? What the heck are they doing over there? It all seems like a bit of a mess and does not instil much confidence.Flying Endeavor and Turns>Airs like this. -
I’m getting a little discouraged though- I need a num-pad, big battery, and a chassis that’s “reserved” enough for the conference room. The G5/G7 tick those boxes, the M15 would work, but I’d have to vinyl over the alien head on the lid. The MSI GS75 seemed like a good candidate, but Linus showed the body still had “A LOT” of flex. I can wait a little longer, but I really need to place an order in the next 10-14 days.Flying Endeavor likes this. -

I don't understand why the configuration options for the G7 are so limited. You can't spec the 2060 with a 144hz screen. You have to jump from $1630 with 2060 all the way up to $2330 with 2070mq in order to get the 144 screen. Their component upgrade prices are pretty frothy (to put it mildly). But even so, I'd still be willing to bite the bullet on their SSD, battery, and screen upgrade price. But I have to draw the line at the add'l $400 for a maxq gpu that may not perform much better than the 2060. I guess I'll have to wait for own or disown's full review.

Stupid decisions by Dell have made the new G series go from budget kings for gamers to AW wannabes with high prices while running hot unless you want to be blasting the extremely loud fans.
When I first heard about the refresh of the G series I was very excited about the potential but like always reality finds a way to slap us in the face.Arondel likes this. -
Also, the battery drain problem (or "feature" as we could see it called) is unacceptable, in my opinion.Montségur likes this. -
I'm afraid I've moved on already. By the time these prices sort themselves out (if they do) and the 1660 is priced as it should be, it would be too late for me. I've already found an MSI with an i7-8750 and a full GTX 1070 for roughly the same price as a Dell RTX 2060. Very disappointed with this fiasco and I blame Nvidia, not Dell.Arondel likes this.
