Thought I'd describe what happened when the hinges gave out on my X300, an off-lease machine purchased about 6 months ago from DFS, with 9 months or so left on the warranty when purchased:

    1) Initiated chat with Dell support, saying I'd like to get the hinges, and the hinges only, which I'd be glad to replace myself (easy enough to do, described on a couple web sites).

    2) Was told a technician would come by and replace the whole LCD assembly. (I guess you can't just get the hinges, which probably cost about fifty cents each.)

    3) Within 48 hours, technician comes to my place, replaces LCD assembly (including hinges), and everything's good.

A little expensive for Dell, I guess, but I was amazed at how quick and easy and effective everything was. The DFS machines tend to be older models, but it's worked out well for me.
