My Dell Inspiron E1705 plays music through the front speakers, even when I insert headphones. How can I make the front speakers mute when using headphones?

I'm using ArchLinux and ALSA 1.0.10.

It shouldn't be playing thru the speakers once you plug the headphones in.

Are you getting any sound in the headphones?

If the problem persists, I'd try updating the sound drivers/doing a Dell update on your system.

I still have not solved this problem, but after some research it appears to be a problem in the snd-hda-intel linux driver for ALSA. I have found several references to headphone jack sensing in other drivers, along with ac97_quirk options that solve the problem. However, the snd-hda-intel does not support the ac97_quirk options yet. I'll report back if I get the problem solved.

Yes, the headphones work -- it is just that they don't trigger the sensor in the driver to mute the speakers.

Well, I have that same problem in my I9300, but mine is USB...if I plug in my headset, only speech goes through the headphones. Everything else goes through the normal computer speakers. Kinda annoying. :(

i know the headphone jack on my 9300 is a bit screwy - meaning that i have to have my headphone just right in order to get full sound. Its almost like i have to have my headphones pulled out of the jack a bit.

Hopefully updating your drivers will fix the problem.

This is fixed. I just upgraded to the 2.6.16.1 kernel along with ALSA 1.0.11rc4 and the headphone jack is properly detected. So now the speakers and headphones work as they should.

For anybody else running Linux on the e1705, with the hda-intel card. I had to add the following to /etc/modprobe.conf in order to remove some crackling:

    options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1

Between the two fixes, sound is working perfectly now.
