The paint on my laptop is fading and it is starting to look ugly at certain angles, straight from the top it still looks okay.. I was wondering if this is normal for about 10 months worth of usage or should I ring up dell right now :)

Also, if it is normal, what can I do? :(

You are going to have wear on the palm rest, especially if you don't keep your hands elevated while typing (you do keep those wrists up, right?). My 1705 is nearly one year old, and I have some slight wear where my wrists touch.

I don't know of any specific technique that can keep the paint pristine. I guess you could try a small amount of car wax in those spots, or maybe a small amount of adhesive backed clear plastic in those spots.

i notice that starting to happen on my e1505. I just took an old cloth Sepultura patch and taped it on the palm rest.

I believe that qualifies as normal wear and tear, and Dell won't fix it... it's not really a problem anyway, you would expect this to happen over time anyway. My friend's laptop's palm rest shows a lot of usage.

I think it's funny the Inspiron word rubs right off. Mine now says INSP O

Yeap, its wear and year, and almost all notebooks have this, unless they have carbon fibre, magnesium composite or brushed aluminum wristrests(which only a handful of notebooks do). However, 10 months isn't bad, I recall a certain notebook that, under a few months of use, had horrendous spots where it'd fade so quickly.

Options to prevent this are quite limited, adhesive plastic 'sheets' are a way to fix it, but often makes it ugly(more so then white bumpers ;)).

My hand sweats frequently and I don't quite get the idea of NORMAL wear and tear. I mean, I just used it for less than a year.. and the paint starts fading? So, by the end 3 years, my laptop handrest will look like someone just sandpaper'ed it and just left it there? o.o

Anyway, I got dell to change it + the missing rubber stopper on my screen. Thanks anyway :)

Although... now I have a dead pixel problem as said in my other thread.

i keep my wrists raised up so i dont wear down the XPS M1210 Palm Rest. im still able to type comfortably. Its just the matter if youre used to typing the way you type.

I think it all depends on the weight if your hands and if you can hold them up without any pain.

Unfortunately that seems to be part of life. My palmrests, and touchpad buttons have lost paint over time. On mine the left side if far worse then the right. I guess we just have to learn how to type right for our next notebooks... =P

mine faded away too after 7 months of usage. I tried to put plastics to preserve it but looked horrible and after 2-3 weeks i just took it off. i look on ebay and found keyboard and case replacements. so if it disturbs you u can change it.
