I bought a Dell E1705 last Christmas and it has ran great up until about a week ago. My problems began when I noticed a major decrease in performance on my machine, especially while playing games. I defragged, chkdsk, scanned for registry errors, spyware, and viruses. I set power options to "high performance", and removed the battery. None of this worked, so I further went and did a clean install of Vista and ran pcpitstop immediately after installing just Windows updates and I still received awful performance results in the processor, video card, and memory category.

The only thing left I can think of that might be happening is it is overheating. The thing is that sometimes it runs 100% perfect while other times I get the awful performance results after running diagnostics. I find it hard to beleive that my processor, new G SKILL memory, and GO 6800GS card have all become faulty at the same time, but who knows.

If you need more information, please let me know and I will provide what I can.

First off try and blow out the computer with compressed air.

You prolly mean 7900GS, not 6800GS.

    Check your temp using I8kfan.

You have to offset the temp 8C on 7900GS.

Sounds like you may need to clean dust bunnies out though, since you didn't clean the system for a year.

Clean it, it will run like brand new.

I did mean 7900GS, sorry. I have a system with the 6800GS and got mixed up :p

I never knew Dell had a fan controller, but how do I access it?

I disassembled the laptop this morning and removed the few pieces of dust that were in it. That does not seem to be the problem ><

Okay, I have it downloaded and installed. Now, what are some of the settings I should set/change?

I let the CPU/GPU/Memory get to 20/45/30 celsius and ran the tests again...and still received the bad results. Any suggestions?

Goto options and offset GPU temp by 8C.

Compare it to ATITool just incase - it should be identical.

    45+8 = 53C which doesn't seem like it's overheating problem.

Try different drivers, and run 3dmarks.

I have tried about three different video drivers, and they all result in the same in the end. I haven't tried 3dmark yet.

All of what I have tried set aside, what does it sound like to you that might be causing the problem?

Performance dropping is just too general to trouble shoot. First thing I would look for was temp, which seems fine, so I suggtested 3dmarks. Give it a try, and if this don't work, only choice I know left would be calling Dell, or try formatting (incase you have other stuff running in background?).

Is there any artifacting in gaming?

Maybe this will help. Here are my latest PCPitstop results:

    DxDiag results:

and I am downloading 3dmark as we speak. I shouldnt have to reformat, because I did that this weekend.

    That is pretty low.

You should be getting around 6k.

I think it's time for you to call Dell and troubleshoot buddy.

Or I can give you a link where more geeks hang around lol.

    Here ya go.

Oh and one more question I forgot to ask was if you were running on AC power.

I have finally uncovered the culprit to my problems!

Who would have thought it would be the AC adapter causing the awful performance?

I had an error that came up one day about an unknown adapter being used and until it was replaced performance would be reduced. I figured this was just a way for Dell to make more money, but I guess this could be the problem considering I have tried everything else.

The new adapter comes in tomorrow, and I am hoping for the best :)
