     Hi,
I've had a dell e1505 for about 6 months now, everything works great, but during my 6 months of use i've had a few bumps. The thing is once in a while (5 times now), the computer won't start.

I press the power button, it turns on, the bluetooth and wifi turn on but immediately turn off, and then the computer just sits there doing nothing. The screen is black as if it were off. The DVD ROM's light turns on and then off immediately, but after that nothing happens. Not even the DELL screen loads, as if to me there is something wrong with the bios( i really don't know)

I've tried everything to turn it on, battery, battery + ac, ac only, i contacted dell and they told me to unplug ac and take off battery and then press the power button for 40 seconds. That doesn't work either. The only thing that does work is that it just turns on when practically feels like it.

    Any help?????

    Ati x1400

My guess is that your BIOS is shot. A virus infected my old Dell and the same thing happened, would only work at random times. Turns out it wiped my BIOS and I had to have it replaced. Not fun.

it's highly unlikely that a virus infected your BIOS; i'd go so far as to say virtually impossible

i'd also say it's highly unlikely to be a problem with the BIOS.

if you can't even get to POST, your choices are limited in terms of troubleshooting.

one thing to try before requesting dell to fix it would be to take one try booting with different ram combinations; remove 1 chip and boot with only 1 chip, then try swapping chips, if you only have 1 chip, try putting it into the other bank. it doesn't sound like a ram problem, but it's something to at least test.

    1. what are "bumps" you mentioned?
    2. have you made any hardware changes to the system?
    3. have you had it serviced?
    4. have you had any parts replaced?

I'm not super tech-savvy, but that's what I was told by the technician that fixed it.

What i meant by bumps is that it has happened to me 5 times now, the same exact thing. I just contacted dell and i'm currently running a diagnostic test. I sure hope its nothing really bad since i bought my pc in the US and live in the Dominican Republic. I'm not sure what support they have for me down here..

I have not had any hardware changes, or has it been serviced or anything like it.

a virus does not operate at the (OSI) level that the BIOS operates at. it most likely sounds like a hardware problem; i.e. a bad motherboard.

a "problem with the BIOS" sounds like something a tech or rep would say just to tell the customer something and get on with the job.

I have the same problem, it just sits there with a black screen after the windows loading logo. It will only boot up properly if i select the boot from last known good configuration.

well what happened to me was that the screen would not turn on and it turns out that it was the bios that had the problem

It is your mother board. Call dell and explain your problem to them

I have the same problem with my xps, would that mean I'd have to send it back? I really hate not being able to use my laptop for a week or so or would they be able to send someone over?

they need to replace the motherboard and depending on the warranty level you will have to send it in. For mail-in yes, onsite no
