I am an Indian planning for an Inspiron 1520. The thing is I would be taking it to Australia for my Masters Degree and would be making an International Transfer for the same (I ain't aware if it can be done). I would want to know about the customer support they(DELL) provide in Australia? And would they regard the warranty for the same since i would be purchasing it from India.

    Thanks in anticipation

Regarding the transfer. Dell does offer an international transfer option (it's called ownership transfer). In your case you're not really transferring the ownership, just changing your location for some time. (you can find more info about intl. ownership transfer here.)

As far as I understand, you want to make this transfer so your laptop gets serviced in Australia. Normally Dell only offers warranty in the country of purchase (when you do an ownership transfer), and only specific types of warranty can be used with the transfer (e.g. you can't upgrade your 1-year factory warranty to a 3-year NBD after a transfer, but you can upgrade a 1-year NBD).

But as usual, there are loopholes available. Here's what I did: I purchased my inspiron 1520 in the states and got it shipped to my APO with a standard 1-year warranty, after I had the laptop for 3 months I looked up the service phone Nr. of dell in "insert country here", and asked for a warranty upgrade. They were very happy to make me an offer. This way I have 3-year NBD warranty, that cost me a fraction of the cost in the states.

Cyanize - just wondering if you are sure about "normally dell only offers warranty in the country of purchase"

I was told by a Dell Kiosk that a dell warranty is international, they recognize that people move all the time, you simply would have to let them know you are moving.

Did I get scammed at the Dell Kiosk?

Sounds like I'm in a similar boat as you, and may want a warranty upgrade in "insert country here" - glad to hear you have done this.

Are there any links to similar topics floating around here?

    Thanks!

If you move countries, international warranty transfer is possible in all cases as long as their is not a ownership transfer. You need to call and explain your circumstance as each case is considered. They are careful because of so many buying in the States for example and then having it shipped to Canada because its cheaper. This is an illegal Dell export that they try and stop. If you sell your system or change ownership, the only ownership transfer possible is next business day warranty plans.

Thank you writing it out more clearly, I might have confused some people out there. (as my post was regarding issues with ownership transfer involved, not only warranty transfer)

As flamenko says, you can transfer the warranty as long as you don't change ownership (and dell offers the same kind of warranty for your product in the country you're moving to). When changing ownership the only warranty that will transfer is the NBD-type (as they offer this in most places). Otherwise you have to purchase warranty in the country you want your dell hardware to be serviced. As was in my case.

Thanks guys - that helps a lot.

So i can purchase warranty for the country i want the laptop serviced in, without having to explain any circumstances? But a transfer of a current warranty might require some discussion....?

Yes but there will be no prob as long as there is no ownership transfer.
