I recently ordered a e1705 (just before they stopped carrying the model) and it was due to ship on the 11th. on that day, i recieved an email telling me it was to be delayed 7 more days. i was wondering: how common does this occur with dell, how likely is it to be delayed again and would it be worth calling to complain? any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I would compare it to a current 1720 and Vostro 1700 laptop and see if that order you placed is still cheaper. If so, then call and ask about its status...sometimes the CS reps can tell you a little more about a delay and possibility try to speed up production. If the new stuff is cheaper, cancel and re-order
