I'm thinking of buying a D820 and have one question. Is there really any difference between the 256mb NVIDIA Quadro NVS 110 and the 512mb NVIDIA Quadro NVS 120? I'm not much of a gamer but is there any point in me getting the 120 over the 110? Does the 120 run hotter than the 110 and thus cause the fan to run more? Also, would both run vista aero etc.?

Also, would getting either of these video cards make the system run noticeably hotter and louder than having the Intel GMA950 integrated graphics?

According to Meaker's NB GFx Chart
    the:
Quadro NVS 120M is equivalent to the Nvidia 7300
Quadro NVS 110M is equivalent to the Nvidia 7200
(it should help you find comparisons)

Also they will be able to run areo since they are deticated cards even though they are low end.
There should no point to getting the 120 if you arent going game or do engineering work

BTW what kind of task are you going to do on the the Dell D820?

Basically I'm going to be using the D820 to take to school and do word processing, play online poker (which is why I'm going with the WUXGA resolution), light photoshopping, iTunes, and web browsing, maybe occasional light gaming like WoW but nothing really graphic intensive.

I've heard the D820 is pretty quiet as far as fan noise goes and am hoping that getting the Quadro 110 vs. Intel GMA950 is not going to make the laptop any hotter, which may increase fan noise.

    I have a D820 with NVS120.

The machine is extremely quiet, in a resonably noised room, I can't hear it at all. Even typing is pretty much silent (depending how hard to hit the keys).

I never hear the fan, even when gaming and I play with no sound. I'm not sure about temperatures, but for normal tasks, it doesn't get all that hot. Maybe a bit warm on the top left where the fan is, but that's about it.

If you're going to do some light gaming and don't care much about graphics, you can stay with the 110, but the 120 should give a little tiny boost.

With a 120, 9cell battery and media bay battery, I manage to squeeze out a good 7 hours of battery life, if that's important to you.

Thanks for the info, but what do you mean about graphics? What kind of difference graphics wise might I notice if I had the 110 rather than the 120? I'm curious because I just placed an order with the 110.

the 110 is fine for what you want. With the trend currently being to put more emphasis on graphics (particularly with Vista), its good to have a dedicated graphics solution like the 110, but the 120 is more than you'll need.

I would tell you to get the 120 if you decide to play more graphics-intensive games (compared to WoW, anyway), but really neither card is made for gaming and the D820 is far from a gaming machine. With the 110, though, it will certainly do what you want.
