I've read a little on the quality of the D620 screens and it seems most people's gripes come from the LG screen, and they say that the Samsung is better. How can I know I'll get a Samsung or an LG before ordering? I know you run some software diagnostics to know what you got...and some people have a way or returning (please explain)...

I'm going to place my order tomorrow!!! Yeah!!!!!!

You can't specify an LCD manufacturer when you order your system. The best that you can do is to place the order, wait until your specs become viewable in "my account", and see if it lists the screen manufacturer...if it does and it's not what you want, you may be able to cancel before they ship. That's risky though, because there is a chance you could order/cancel 10 times and still end up with a screen you don't want. You can always wait until you get the system, look at the screen and decide for yourself if it's acceptable, then keep or return based on that. I have heard of a couple people who were successful at requesting a certain screen manufacturer when getting just their screens swapped. You may have to escalate it to a supervisor in tech support to get anything like that done.

    thanks kgbeezer1----
Note that my warranty (I've heard Latitude service is top notch) is "3 Year Mail-In Economy Plan". Considering that what you describe is a possibility, should I shell out the 50 bucks and upgrade to the onsite plan that way they can replace faster and at home instead of having to deal with UPS trips and such?

I'm going to also do another post (not sure to continue in this string) on pros and cons of keeping XP Home (I have a personal XP Pro)...and doing a fresh reinstall---I figure if I ask right now I'll be better prepared, b/c I know when it arrives I'll find to tear the box open and start using it with the current config...and I might procrastinate!

You can't request a specific brand for the screen but don't worry. Once you receive your system, if it's not a Samsung call them up and have it replaced. I did and was told that they don't have a the WXGA+ by Samsung. I took a chance I said fine just replace my screen. When the tech called the next day to confirm that I was home to come out and change the screen I asked him on the phone to open the box up and tell me what brand it is. It turned out to be a Samsung!!! It seems like whenever you ask for a replacement they try to replace it with a different brand. Good luck. You'll like the D620. I do. :D

Hey Tach...it really depends on if you can spare the extra 50, if you can i'd say to do it. Another thing to keep in mind though, if you are tech savvy enough to swap out the screen yourself, they would most likely agree to just send it to you vs. having to send the notebook in. I'm not sure how it works on the D620, i've got the M1710 and i've read a lot of threads about people swapping them out themselves. It's usually reported to be pretty simple, the trickiest part is removing the bezel (to avoid cracking it). There are also diagrams at the Dell site that show you how to do it, again, this is the case for the 1710, I can't imagine why it would be different for the 620 though.

In my case, I would consider that major surgery that I wouldn't mind trying on an old computer, but not a brand new one---I think the 99 dollars will be worth it (I know I thought it was 50 at first), I'll skimp on the bluetooth, I can hardly think of a reason and I do, I'll buy a USB later on
