I ordered a D620 online this morning about 8:30. This afternoon, I checked my email to see if I had gotten a confirmation - none found!

I called Dell, and talked to a lady in Austrailia ? That's what the heavy accent sounded like. She wasn't too swift. She tried to find my order and couldn't find anything. She said I could either re-order or wait until morning to see if it showed up, and if it didn't re-order at that time. I told her I'd think about it. You'd think she would try to make sure that I ordered, but she seemed like she didn't want me to order UNTIL we could be positive that the order from that morning was truly lost.

About an hour later, I called and talked to a really nice young lady named Aleida. She attempted to find my order and felt confident that it had gotten lost. I had already created a new order and saved it to my shopping cart. She pulled it up and made a few suggestions on some changes. She also offered my 4 yr onsite warrent in place of the 3 yr onsite at no extra charge. She also cut the price by about a $ 100 over the pricing on the website.

It was obvious that they really don't know much about this model yet. I actually knew more than she did. Case in point - I ordered it with the 6 cell battery and she offered to give me the 9 cell battery at no extra cost. I informed her that the 9 cell protruded from the front of the laptop (like the D410) and that's why I ordered the 6 cell.

However, she did sign me up with a 60 day same as cash account - which took about 2 minutes - so I didn't even have to give her any credit card information.

Right now they don't have discrete graphics - just the integrated graphics, but that's fine for me. I went with the following general specs...

    2.0 T2500
    2 gig RAM
100 gig 7200 rpm hard drive
    WSXGA+ (1440 X 900)
    DVD-RW
    EVDO card
    Fingerprint reader
Extra battery - fits in the optical drive
Extra AC adapter - 65 watt
    Overnight shipping

Total price was $ 2714.65 with tax and shipping.

The estimated ship date is 05/01/06; however she said that this is probably a worse case scenario and would be surprised if it shipped much sooner. Let's hope so.

I will keep you apprised of it's progress...

I've had to make two changes to the order that I saved in my cart.

First, Aleida configured the order with ground shipping, when I had selected overnight shipping. When I sent her an email, she changed it immediately.

Second, she had it configured with the 4 cell battery. I specified the 6 cell because they are the same size and there is no price difference. Why would you order a 4 cell battery? Anyhow, I sent her another email last night, but have not gotten a reply that the order has changed yet.

Kind of makes you wonder exactly how much training these Dell sales reps get? As in NONE!

They must be relying on the consumer to know what they want or perhaps thats why they get so many returns.

I forgot to mention that she also threw in a Bluetooth optical mouse for 65 cents.

If I order this machine (which I may), I think I would order the 4 cell battery intentionally, assuming that would make the unit somewhat lighter. I would get the 6-cell modular battery for when I need more battery life.

I'm not sure the 4 cell battery weighs any less than the 6 cell battery. I know they cost the same, and I know that the 9 cell battery extends out the front of the unit. (Note, the battery now goes in the bottom front of the laptop.)

4 cell battery does weigh less, it's why the starting weight (4.41lbs) is with the 4 cell battery, integrated gfx, and wxga screen, AND travel module... with upgraded components and dvd drive, it'll probably weight a little over 5lbs.

Isn't funny the way they will do anything to make the laptop weigh as little as possible, just so they can say it weighs less than 5 lbs.

I added the Nvidia card to my order but they had to cancel my first order and re-order the D620, but it looks like she's applied a $ 600 off now, so it might be cheaper than it was the first time.

    Hi Guys,
On the Dell UK site and on small business and home the D620 isn't offered with the Nvidia, which is the only reason why I want the laptop!!
Does anyone know why this is?

Total price was $ 2,150.00 with tax and shipping. They also threw in their low end color laser. I didn't think it was a great deal given we have a business account that does a little volume. I think prices will go down in a couple of months but we wanted to try a couple of them.

I would call them and see what kind of deal they will make you. The sales rep I had was very helpful and more than ready to give me freebees and special pricing.

I'd give it a day or two. The US site didn't have the Nvidia card as an option on the first day and I ordered anyway. When it became available, I re-ordered and cancelled my original order.

Does anybody know yet if the RAM in the D620 is user replaceable? ...if this is first hand knowledge, could you post a picture of the exposed RAM housing?

    Thanks,
    Nick

I ordered my Latitude D620 this afternoon:

    Intel® Core™ Duo T2500 (2.00GHz) 667Mhz Dual Core
14.1 inch Wide Screen WXGA+ LCD Panel
    2.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS
Intel® Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 950
    80GB Hard Drive, 9.5MM, 7200RPM
    Standard Touchpad
    No Floppy Drive
Genuine Windows® XP Professional, SP2, with media
    Dell Wireless® 350 Bluetooth Module
Dell Combination Power Adapter includes Auto/Air and AC
    24X CD-RW/DVD w/ Cyberlink PowerDVD™
    Intel® 3945 802.11a/g Dual-Band Mini Card
Resource CD - Contains Diagnostics and Drivers
    4 Cell Primary Battery
    3 Year Mail-In Economy Plan
    No Onsite System Setup
McAfee ® SecurityCenter 15 Month Subscription
    Quick Reference Guide

    Total: $2029.04

I opted for the 4 cell battery because I wanted something very light, but I didn't want to wait for the D420, which I read will come out at least 2 months after the D620/D820. I just hope the battery is not ridiculously short-lived.

Has anybody received their D620 or D820 yet? I would like to know when the first ones are shipping. A CSR placed my order for a D820 ont he last week of March and told me it was supposed to ship by friday (yesterday) but obviously hasn't come yet. Would like to have an idea of a timeframe. I tried calling them and they just said to be patient... argh. should be a really nice laptop. Got the 1.83GHz w/NVidia 110, 80GB, WSXGA, 1GB, DVD+-RW, WinXP Pro SP4, etc... CAN'T WAIT.

One more questions, I noticed that the bigger battery sticks out on the D620... Does anybody know if the 9-cell battery sticks out on the D820? Hopefully it will be flush. wonder if it actually runs to the claimed 7hours.

    UPDATE:
My order has shipped but no tracking number. It must be on a flight from Malasia with some chicken crates en route to Dell USA.
