    Hi all,

I'm thinking of purchasing a new hard drive for my Dell Latitude D620. It currently has a 40gb drive and i was wondering if I needed to buy a specific brand/model or if an off the shelf 2.5inch drive would suffice? Obviously i don't want to buy the hardware to find it doesn't fit, etc.

I have two D620's so am probably the best person to answer you! I use one as my current home system while I wait for my XPS to arrive, and one is my work laptop.

You will need a SATA 2.5" hard disk drive. Typically it doesnt matter about the make/model etc, as it will work nonetheless.

However, if you are concerned about performance, then you will want to go for a 7200rpm HDD.

To be honest, I only ever use 7200rpm HDD's so I know Im getting the best performance possible. I have used both Hitachi TravelStar and Seagate Momentus HDD's in my D620's. In fact at the moment one has a Seagate while the other has a Hitachi. Although both are 7200rpm, so both are very fast, the Seagate is much better IMO, since it runs cooler and much quieter. The performence seems to be better overall.

Now, I have an offer for you.....bear in mind Im unsure as to where you are located, so the below is if you are in the UK only.....

My home Latitude D620 is a fully maxed out laptop. Here are my specs.....

    Dell Latitude D620
    Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 (2.16 GHz)
    256MB NVIDIA Quadro NVS 110M,
    4GB DDR2 Memory,
160GB SATA (7.200rpm) Seagate Momentus Hard Drive,
    Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g & Bluetooth
    8 X DVD+/-RW Drive
    Windows Vista Ultimate - 32bit

Once I receive my XPS I will be selling the D620 later on this month. But before I sell, I will be removing a 2GB RAM module and replacing the HDD with a smaller one, probably a 100GB, just so I can make a bit of extra cash out of the RAM chip, and out of the high performance HDD.

If you are interested in purchasing the HDD or a 2GB RAM module please feel free to contact me. Obviously they are guraanteed to work in the D620, since that is what they have been [lightly] used in. If you would feel more comfortable completing the transaction through eBay etc, for example, I dont mind either way.

Bear in mind, its UK only ;)

Nevertheless, I would recommend a Seagate Momentus 7200rpm drive - the very best drives I have used, and I trust them greatly. Never had one fail on me. When I get my XPS, Im hopeing it comes with a Momentus. If not I'll be buying another 2 to set up RAID ;)

I forgot to mention, if you need any help in swapping the drive over etc, gimme a shout. I'll knock up a few pictures with a guide, or make a quick Youtube video of how to change the HDD if you want?

I was browsing the web and found:

    200GB 2.5" Momentus 7200.2 SATA 3.0Gb s Internal Hard Drive

Will that work in the D620?

Also, what is the easiest way to make an image of my HD in the laptop now and burn that image to the new drive. I have done this w/ desktop machines using different software programs. I don't want to have to reload everything on the new machine as there are tons of programs.

My current confiruation is a DVD/ROM (not writable), but I have an external 120GB USB drive. My current HD is 95 or 100 GB.

    Any suggestions?
