The Dell D500 looks so good for the budget conscious, but darn it, I went ot the bookstore yesterday and went to verify if this was true on the D600 which has the same case from what I understand (as discussed in my previous post), and this was indeed verified with the D600!
Well, this problem really SUCKS! The machine and its price looks so good otherwise. But this handrest thing! I mean, thats right where your hand lays when you type, and it is so damn HOT, just as tons of people have complained about in the reviews on the D600 at cnet. How stupid is THaT? And Dell keeps on "custom building" them for people as if there is no problem with that. Frankly, its ABNORMAL.

Title should say "D600", not D500. But I am inferring that the problem is shared...not positive, but from what Ive gathered (same case) I would think so.
In any event, if anyone knows which of the HD options in the D500/600 is the coooolest running and might mitigate this lack of cooling the HD problem, I would like to know!

I wonder if Dell engineers patented a new technology called "Handsink"...cause thats what your hand effectively becomes! My hand got heat-fatigued after 5mins from the D600's keyboard! -
I heard on the cnet reviews, (i've looked at most responses) that the hard drive generates more heat if you don't get a more powerful RAM to back it up. Someone suggested that if you don't get anything below a 512MB RAM for a 40 GB HD that the heat problem wouldn't be so bad. Perhaps it's worth going back to the bookstore and checking out the configurations of the system they have over there. Let us know what happens Neil

Hi Seafoam,
Makes sense. 512MB aftermarket card is only $100.
But which HD version is the best to go for? I have read conflicting info re: if its the brand, rpm, and/or capacity that matters most in mitigating this potential problem.
