I am looking for an ultraportable, and was thinking about the Dell D420. But then I came upon the MacBook. It's only 2cm larger, but weighs 1 kg more. Is that a good choice (not looking at the OS)? Or should I go for the D420 anyway?

All down to what you need more, performance/power, or portability.

The Latitude D420 only comes with an ULV Core Duo U2500 (1.2GHz), 4200rpm HDD to 80GB max, and no built in optical drives, while the price starts from US$1199

The MacBook comes with the Core Duo T2400 (1.86GHz), 5400rpm HDD to 160GB, and a built in DVD writer, and starts from US$1099.

If you want more performance/expandability, need an optical drive and don't want to lug around an external unit, get the MacBook.

If you absolutely need something light and small, then get the Dell.

ThinkPad x60 might be worth a look.
